Ya, racism sucks. Unfortunately, statistics often show that a majority of certain races or people who grew up in different countries will have varying views or behaviors. In our newspapers, certain crimes are almost always committed by or against people of certain ethnics. But, it's not fair to say that all of them are like that, or even half by that matter. But, most people will still see it that way.

For example, in our news, we constantly hear about people getting shot and killed. Most of the victims and suspects are "black". This causes people to think that "black people" are prone to gun violence. The reality is, this only applies to maybe 1% of them, but since most of the events we witnessed involved them, people will more likely think that it applies to 99% of them.

I have also been a target of racism. It has been increasing because there has been an increase of Chinese immigrants who can't even speak English and don't know anything or care about Canada. A lot of them constantly take advantage of some of our more lax laws, cheat on taxes, and basically create a negative image of Chinese people. Unfortunately, many people assume all of us Asians, whether we be CBC (Chinese born Canadian), Japanese, Taiwanese, Korean, Viet, etc. are all Chinese, and that we are all like that. As a result, I have been treated by some people whom I've no connection with disrespect or discourtesy and sometimes plain bullying (eg. assault).

The opposite of being targeted by racism though is the fact that some people use it as a tool. When they are caught doing something wrong, they accuse the cops or administrations of judging them unfairly due to racism, even though they might have a record. Groups are always demanding funding for ethnic groups, and if they don't receive it, they accuse the government of racism. Ya, racism is used quite commonly where I live nowadays as an excuse or threat.

I find it ironic though... when I was a small child, I had friends of all ethnic backgrounds. I had friends of both genders. Back then, I probably was able to tell that boys and girls are different, but I never really considered that my friends of different ethnicity were any different. I didn't even notice that their skin colors were different. I basically classified people as my friends, or not my friends. I only found out about races and their differences after I was taught about the concept of racism, and as I hear more and more about it, I start to distinguish more and more. The only thing that stops me is my constant reminder to myself of all those friends of mine who were all the same to me back in kindergarten.

Racism is a messy issue... and it gets more complicated when you have been subjected to racist treatment. Ya, racism is an issue that I've been debating about for a long time...

Ok my here's my two cents. Racism, real racism is stupid. There is no logic behind it except that it's easier to be afraid of something you don't understand rather than try to understand it. And fear breeds hate.

But people who can't take a "racist" joke piss me off too. A lot of the jokes I know are "racist" jokes. And you bet I tell them, especially when I am in the company of that ethnicity. I have friends of all ethnic backgrounds and I tell jewish jokes in front of jews, black jokes in front of black poeple and muslim jokes in front of muslims. And all of my friends love those jokes then make fun of my ethnic background, as well as their own. I do the same I say "racist" jokes about my ethnic background and then about theirs. People it's a joke no point in taking it seriously, doing that just shows you have no sense of humor rather than that you are anti-racist.

Peace out

I agree. I hate how we have to choose words so carefully because someone is so anal about not being racist that they end up being more racist by putting so much emphasis on it. I mean, Oreo cookies... even that's been dubbed as a racist term now... like what the hell?

I know a lot of people like that.. and I have to tell them, open mouth, insert foot.

Though, I'm not saying people can't find other's with different religions, culture, ect, ect different.. but in no way should you bash them, hate them, ect. I mean.. don't you hate it when people do that to you? Can you say, hypocrite? I think you should take things that are different as a learning experience.

If I dislike person "different" from me, it's because of their personality/behaviour, not ethnicity. Funny thing is when white people discriminate against each other. I've had major troubles with racist people in here. The harder I tried to show them that they're wrong by calling me stereotypical names, the angrier they got. After a while I just let it go and learned to joke about it.

Ditto, it pisses me off, too.

When someone says that I'm a racist cause of my jokes or something I always reply: "I'm not racist. How can I be? I hate all races equally." That usually shuts them up biggrin

im not racist but i do tend to hang out with one group more than another but because of personality wise
we are all humans no race is superior theres good and bad in all races
think bout it scientifically your skin color is that color because of the pigment melanin in the skin and as well as eye and hair
and we humans are 99.9% the same and 98.5% genetically the same as chimps we all r carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen ect
if you think religiously we are all creations of god
and if thats not enough think society wise discrimination and prejudge is illegal not the thought or feeling but the behavior
so dont discriminate pppl
gods watching, society is lurking and um chimps too

Sometimes, it varies with the people I meet of each race. So it's more like I hate you, not I hate all of you. Do you get what I'm trying to say?

Racism is something very complex. We can’t really blame or hate a person that is racist. Racism is something that people are born into…What I mean is that it’s not really a person’s fault if they are racist. They were taught by their society, parents, friends, etc, ever since they were little to dislike a person of another color…for example the Klu Klux Klan..they are extremely case. They almost brainwash their children to hate any other races and to think of them selves as the superior race. If anyone saw the movie Mississippi Burning…would understand what I mean. Well I guess we should be thankful that we grew up in an environment that taught us to be open-minded.
