First chapter ever where Naruto's personality seems cool.

I don't know, this chapter just seemed pointless to me. All it did was show something we've known for so long: He's determined as hell to accomplish his goals. It felt more like Kishimoto was needlessly repeating himself rather than trying to make Naruto more badass.

I did enjoy the confidence Naruto displayed interacting with the 9-tails. That is an improvement.

I'm of two minds about this: On the one hand, I agree it wasn't necessary to have a chapter where Naruto repeats all his usual speeches about saving Sasuke and stopping the war. Kishimoto all but copied and pasted Naruto's dialogue from other times where he's made similar declarations. (If Naruto admitted he had some regrets about how he'd dealt with things in the past, declared that had a plan for stopping the war, etc. at least that would've been something new for his character.)

On the other hand, I was extremely glad we finally got more about Naruto + Sasuke's childhood. Seeing how they met and why Naruto became interested in him helps flesh out this moronic "bond" they supposedly have. Sasuke motivates so much of what Naruto does that it's hard to empathize with Naruto's reasons for wanting to save him when I can't understand why it's so important to him. I wouldn't say it's suddenly clear to me, but I guess I can see why Naruto might have found it interesting to meet a person who, for the first time, had a deep hatred of something other than Naruto. That, at least, is something we didn't know about Naruto before.

Wow. It was a nice chapter, really. The best in a while... Naruto was kind of cool... biggrin
