My brother has read ALOT of shoujo but... He dislikes most of them.
He thinks that shoujo art is too 'scary' for him, although I keep telling him it is REALLY beautiful!! I mean, shoujo art contains ALOT of bishie characters and such and such-probably has too much flowers and stuff? =.=...
But what really annoys him (and I admit, I am frequently annoyed with it too), is the fact that alot of shoujo romance mangas have all have the general cliched stuff- love triangles, misconceptions, secret identities and more misunderstandings...
My brother says he cannot relate to the main female protagonists in shoujo mangas for they are infactuated with their 'perfect' unrealistic bishounen partners who somehow likes the girl although the girl is average...
I agree with him. I can't seem to relate to shoujo characters... But maybe that is because I like shounen action mangas...
But one shoujo manga we both enjoy is Skip Beat. The characters are... Just unique. I mean, Kyoko isn't someone who is head over heels in love since she got betrayed by Fuwa- unlike most of the shoujo female characters...

I'm a guy and I'd say that 30% of what i read are shoujos ( and I am straight ) ... the problem is : im 6 feet 5 inch high and im 300 pounds, I played ( american ) football in high school. I asked one of my football teamates which is my best friends and reads a lot of mangas like me if he reads shoujo and he answered something like : are you crazy you've got to be gay if your a boy and read shoujos and since then he laughs at me because of that T.T . Since that time I thought I was the only guy which read shoujos, I feel relieved to know that I am not alone smile

( sorry for my grammar I'm french and I'm not totaly bilangual ^^ ( from quebec (canada ) not from france !! )

When I got back into anime in the mid-nineties, fansubbed Marmalade Boy was my gateway drug. I think that a lot of fans at the time were similarly omnivorous. So, I didn't think that it's strange at all for guys to like shoujo. I'd say about half of what I read is shoujo. Right now, I think that Natsume's Book of Friends and Kimi ni Tokode are pair of the better titles out there.

I read Shoujou and indeed Shoujou can have lots of cliches too which you might take for granted because you enjoy them (from girls point of view).

Ive tried Yaoi in the past because some people always hype over it but it can get mindblowing weird. So i cant enjoy it in the least. Shounen-Ai may be possible though.

Also some girls find Hentai awful but im certain Hentai is equally weird as Yaoi.

Also the Shoujou manga with really intimate relations can get good but then the personalities can get desturbing at other times.

to be honest I'd rather to read shoujo+smut than your generic shounen harem anyday.

I'm pretty straight and I've read a bit of yaoi. It may have just been because it was in a collected volume with some straight stories but I have read some.

I'm a straight guy, 17, and i read shoujo mangas (josei too). I think I've read almost all the shoujos from the top shoujo poll. I like MIDORIKAWA Yuki's works, and at the same time i like seinens. And I'm constantly searching for good mangas from all genres.

and about yaoi: I've tried to read yaoi (and shounen-ai) mangas many time in the past but i can't. I have no problem with gay couples irl, but since i'm straight i can't appreciate it much (but i like shoujo-ais, ha). There are exceptions though, like Nabari no Ou, Let Dai or Zankoku na Kami ga Shihaisuru. Those with good stories are winners.
