A romance where the male doesn't end up w/ som1. It should have less comedy and more emphasis on drama. Also male lead as in the protagonist, or from the male leads POV.

The reason he doesn't/can't end up w/ anyone can't be something lame like he's totally unattractive or someone is terminally ill or it's forbidden.

Note that the definition of "ending up w/ someone" and "going out w/ someone" is different.

But since the chances of a manga like that is low, here are some exceptions
-he can end up w/ someone at the end of the manga
-he can end up w/ someone as long as it's near the end

Also if he does end up w/ som1 please don't have them show up at like the first chapter...

No examples, but could be he has no luck or things just don't work out.

Boku no Hatsukoi o Kimi ni Sasagu is not really what I'm looking for (b/c of the reason, and they are already love each other since the beginning), but it's kind of like that idea.

The closest I can think of is this one special chapter in Hetakoi, illustrating his past relationship.
edit: and Vampire Juujikai

This whole request is really sketchy... don't know how to put it into words. NO Yaoi.

Some chapters from Salad Days are like that. Perhaps you can try it.

Hmm... depends on how you define happiness, but Not Simple is quite depressing yet satisfying...

I thought of some stories in Because I Love You (mir2030s), but it's probably not what you are looking for.

In any case though,

Kanojo no Namida ga Yuki da Toshitara .
It's labelled as tragedy, but not the death kind . it's really heart warming.

Haru yo, Koi is like that till the very last chapter. It's all about failed relationships.

It has yuri listed but that's a very side character that's kinda superfluous.

I second Vampire Juujikai

I'm not a big fan of romance so I can't think of an exact match, sorry, but you could try

Apothecarius Argentum - More like Boku no hatsukoi because
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
the love interest is a childhood friend, but they can't be together due to status division and Argent is toxic to touch

Let Dai - About two male friends. One is a deliquent from a good, but neglectful, family and the other is your average teenager. It's listed as Shounen-ai, but it's more fascination than romantic feelings, though it can be interpreted as shounen-ai. I know you said no yaoi, but I really don't see this as a romance and it's an awesome manga so thought I'd throw it out there.

Good but not at all what you asked for.

Skip beat - ok so this has a female lead, but due to a trauma at the start of the manga she came to hate love, yet she has her share of interested men. It's more comedy based than drama and hasn't ended yet, but it's at 175 chapters and no sign of her settling down. This is quite light hearted really so you can save it for when you feel like a pick me up, but don't want a fairytale ending.

Hope this helps.

in the long scheme Kurozuka fits the description of never finding happiness, he does ephemerally only
