Okay i suppose i made the topic sound weird, but i am honestly curious. You see i live in Canada and i go to a catholic school (high school/secondary school/ grades 9 - 12), the girls use to have to wear kilts (skirts), but they could also wear pants.
Know of days we do not wear skirts. Its banned. We can only wear pants.

Anyways on to my topic question,
i noticed that like all MANGAS with a school girl in them, wears a skirt!
I have never seen a manga character (female) that's a high school student wearing pants!
Well except.. gender-blend...

i am wondering, in japan, are girls not aloud to wear pants to school?

if so i feel that's kinda sexist...

For the most part, yes, girls have to wear skirts as part of their junior high or high school uniform. It is sexist. Since Japan is a traditionalist society (for the most part), they tend to stall progressive feminist movements for gender equality.

If you think that's bad, you should look up the term 'office lady' (in Japanese, of course). Some businesses have a glass ceiling. Over there, they have a falling glass ceiling with spikes and firebrands, i.e. women who are past the age of 30-40 are shunned and discriminated against for working.

On the other hand, not being allowed to wear a skirt is also wrong... I like being able to choose and being able to wear both.

Yeah like i would love to wear the skirt, but the seniors at my school roll them up super short and wear nothing underneath x.x

so i'm kinda glad they got rid of them

Ahhhhh.... That's just.... wrong........! Sucks for the girls who wore skirts normally... (with undergarments)....

Anyway... I like skirts. It's popular nowadays around here for girls to wear shirts tucked into skirts with cute patterns, and the skirts actually aren't that short, which is nice.

I attended public schools, so we were free to wear what we wanted, except shorts/skirts had to be longer than the tip of the longest finger when the hands were rested to the side, among many other dress code rules. In the private schools around here, the girls' uniforms have skirts. They go to the knee, and it doesn't seem like the girls roll them up or anything; they just wear them as they are.

In many Asian countries, students in high school generally wear uniforms, so for girls whose uniforms included a skirt/dress, they can't wear anything else besides the uniform. In Vietnam though, my mom wore an ao dai uniform for high school which is a dress/pants set. In my opinion, it's one of the prettiest school uniforms out there. :3

At my high school the girls were allowed to choose, but most chose a skirt anyway. I think I only saw like 4 different girls wearing pants over my entire time at that school. I agree there should be an option, but is it really automatically sexist to make them wear skirts if the large majority want to wear them anyway? It would save on uniform manufacturing costs, so that could be the reason behind it. Besides, women in Japan wear pants way less than women in western countries. It's just the way it is.

In my highschool years, we wore uniforms. Of course we wore skirts. Not pretty and cute ones like those japanese uniforms.
Our uniforms are outdated fashion, haven't change since around 30 years??
The top is white and the bottom is grey.

IMO girls should have the choice of wearing skirts or not. (Heck, I think guys should have the option too...)

All my schools were public so girls wore whatever they wanted, with the usual dress code limits (have to be longer than your hands down at your sides, etc.).

There weren't any restrictions where I went to high school (except skirts had to be a modest length) and there definitely aren't any at my university. Unfortunately, almost every girl I know wears pants. In fact, it's been quite awhile since I've seen a girl who hasn't worn pants. It's depressing for me, since I like the appearance of a cute girl in a skirt.

I only had to wear an uniform until 4th grade, since 5th we could wear whatever we wanted. The uniform was okish I guess, and it was a dress. But it was so stupid in the winter (and we have quite cold winters) because we still had to wear them, so every girl had a pair of jeans underneath. I was only 7 and I was already aware how stupid we looked, the guys were ok since their uniform had long pants. They went through hell in the summer because they had to wear the same uniform they used during winter. Starting 5th grade it was heaven, I could finally wear whatever I wanted.

Actually, in MOST of the public school in ASIA,
all the students have to use uniform and as for girls, (it means that) have to use skirts (because the regular uniform for girls is skirt).
unless it's school that dont require the students to use uniform.
I wear skirt from kindergarten till now in High School =______=

We didn't have to wear a uniform in any of schools I was going to and most girls were wearing pants (jeans, usually). Only during some school ceremonies girls were expected to wear skirts, but elegant pants were okay too. But during the summer there were more girls wearing skirts every day to school because it was hot and wearing shorts to school was still frowned upon, especially by some older teachers.

When I was at school, within the Uniform code there was an option for the girls on whether you wanted to wear a skirt or not.

Some girls used to like switching it around, especially in the winter when it was so cold, it was nice to wear trousers instead.
