Some good manga can change your outlook on life. Two particular mangaka come to mind:

Urasawa Naoki (such as Monster, 20th Century Boys, Pluto and Happy!)
Arakawa Hiromu (such as Full Metal Alchemist and Silver Spoon)

Three books in particular for me
All Creatures Great and Small - Really makes you rethink the relationship between man and animal, especially the part about the old farmer that walked miles each day to take care of the cow. And even human compassion to some degree.
My Sisters Keeper - I think almost every person I've talked to that read this book came away with different opinions. Makes you think about the morals involved with science and basic human rights, although I'm not sure if this is an actual issue in real life....
Outliers - Made me much more hard working.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys smile
I'll try as many of those as I can, especially 'The Prince of Tides' - loved the opening bigrazz
I have read Superior and Full Metal Alchemist; they affected me the same way too.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer.
you might think 'oh gooood nooo, twilight all over again!'
no no, quite the opposite. I think it's one of the best, if not THE best book I've read in a long , long time.
It's really a pageturner, I read it in one night, I stayed up 'till 4 am , just because I couldn't stop reading it.
I really recommend it.

My Sister's Keeper for me as well. Not only did it make me really consider the issues in the book, but after finding out that a friend of mine was in nearly the same situation as the main character...well, I had a whole 'nother bout of re-evaluation. Even while I was reading it, it never really, fully occurred to me that stuff like that happened to people.

im glad to hear this from someone who didnt like twilight
i thought about buying it several times because the summary at the back sounded interesting
but i didnt because i thought it would be disappointing just like her other works
but after reading ur post,i can buy it with no hesitation biggrin

and to answer Casey D. Geek's request:

from the books i've read recently..sophie's world might do the trick
from books ive read long ago:
remember me by christopher pike(theres another book by sophie kinsella with the same name,so be careful not to mixup..unless you secretly like chicklit like i do hehe)...ok i read this book when i was 12 and till now i cant get over how amazing it was..its the type of book that will make you think "if i died today would i be satisfied with the things ive done throughout my life"
before i die by Jenny Downham....this one was beautiful
requiem for a dream..there's a very good movie adaptation too..its about drugs in case you're wondering

movies:
donnie darko...kudos to you if you understand the point of the movie from the first time
it took me like 4 times to get what was going on haha but once you get it..its like an ultimate mindfuck

mangas:
neon genesis evangelion is really good
death note if you havent already read it

Lord of the flies...

Maybe a few other books. I don't really know... I can't remember almost anything I read as a child or teenager.
