well, like everyone else, i am very hyped when the goddess arc was started. But after 30 chapter passed, my hype is changed into dissapointment by how wakaki portray the goddess so dumb. Is anyone feel the same as i am?

if i list it:

Diana: well, the smartest goddess around, but as the manga portray it, she pretty much just equal to haqua. Her "intelligence" also just like haqua, that is give some information on keima while she herself never capable guessing high level conspiracy like keima or nora. Also, by chapter 152 that Lune wearing tenri school uniform, probably in next 10 chapter we can see diana hold the idiot-ball like haqua did.

Apollo: self-proclaimed idiot. enough said

Vulcan and Mars: Your typical "attack first, question later" character. Having same personality with typical brawling shounen protagonist (i.e luffy, naruto, ichigo), brainy is pretty much not their primary traits. There is also hilarious fact that yui and tsukiyo are in the same class but vulcan and mars fail to know each other, even after both winged.

Minerva: probably the most idiot goddess around. While Vulcan and Mars harsh action is justified that they not know Apollo warning, Minerva is not. It is just weird that despite knowing apollo warning, minerva action to keima after he mention that he is forced by devil to do his action is just refused to talk to him. That pretty much idiot. How if fiore instead keima that come, proclaim she is enemy and then stab shiori? Even apollo not that stupid, since when suspicious person is around, she warn kanon, try to hide herself as precaution, etc.

...It was hard reading your post, but to answer the question: No, I'm not "annyoed".

its not really living up to its potential

and as time goes
its getting worse and worse

There's nothing annoying about them, in fact, I think they're quite interesting.

I am not really annoyed by the portrayal of each goddess's intelligence. I suppose I would be disappointed if I was expecting them to be super smart geniuses or the like, but it was established early on that Diana was the smartest among them (or one of the smartest): in chapter 114 page 13, Apollo explicitly hopes for the help of Diana's wisdom.

And on a last note, I think you are being a little harsh in respect of intelligence. At the very least, I don't consider Diana to be an idiot. You can argue that she might not be overly smart or something like that, but that doesn't mean she is stupid. And I don't know why you say that Diana is not capable of figuring out conspiracies or the like, in chapter 73 she is clearly aware, or at least suspicious about it.

I'm also going to have to disagree, topic poster. The goddesses simply act like people in hiding, who don't want to be found out. Keima seems much smarter than them simply because he's dangerously genre savvy and plans his actions ahead of time. And mostly his dangerously genre savvy nature is what makes the other characters look normal in comparison.

Actually, if this got into a competition of high level mathematical equations, I wouldn't be surprised if the goddesses would put up an amazing fight, but this hasn't quite popped up yet.

That's the problem lol.

They are in hiding yet they not bother to show off? If they are in hiding, why would vulcan smack keima head openly and minerva and mars doesn't bother to "come out" in place that full of people (minerva in daylight library and mars in daylight amusement park)?

i'm aware keima being genre savvy, but that doesn't mean other characters should be idiot right? especially we are shown that devils like nora or akari also smart, but why goddess dumb?

Let take minerva as example. Keima accidentally implied he is part of the enemy ("i work for demon" statement) and he even know that she is goddess, a fact that even her host (shiori) not know at that time, yet she just think him as normal 3rd bystander? That can be considered elsea's level idiocy. biggrin

I don't think it's that they are dumb. I think it is because there opponent was Keima. These are goddesses, they probably never experienced something like love before. So sharing a body with a girl that had fallen in love with Keima, they themselves probably have feelings for him as well. The goddesses probably don't under stand this "human' emotion, so all the could understand was that there was something about Keima. So they acted more hostel towards him. It was probably later on that they learn that the feelings they were having was love.

And to the ones that are going to say something like, "but the goddesses use love as a power source". Yes they do use love, but they get it from others, so they themselves probably never felt it, untell Keima. (There are a lot of things people use, and never know how it works)

Considering how dumb the vast majority of the characters are, it would take some truly "wtf" actions to make me feel annoyed at amy of the characters. In other words, they'd have to pull a "Hakua" or two.

uhhh what? how love is factoring in this? confused

Beside, someone close by and you love doesn't always good person in conspiracy and political situation. The mangaka himself have shown that with haqua-fiore event. roll eyes

i think the goddess should have known about betrayal and suspicious thingy... you know... the history about war against hell and everything... But surprisingly, except diana, their action in human world with human host is just too dumb and careless for a bunch of deities that have experienced great wars in the past. For starter, none being precautious and hide themselves until keima tell them to do so roll eyes

About this war argument, I think you are going at it the wrong way. First, I don't think we were told that the goddesses (at least these particular goddesses) were involved in a war other than when they sealed old hell, so I would narrow my assumption to that particular war only.

Second, I don't think we were told how involved they were in that war. I was under the impression that they entered late in the war just to end it. The fact that most new demons not only ignore the involvement of the goddesses in the war but also their existence altogether, makes me think that their roll in the war was rather short, to be covered up so well for so many years (in a society with individuals with so long life span).

Third, we know war is full of deception and lies and whatnot but one can only learn from being tricked until one realizes it. In a war, I would expect that most lies and deceptions would be known only after the conflict is over, that is, when the goddesses were sleep. What if they were deceived and they never realized it?, what if new hell tricked the goddesses to sacrifice themselves and seal old hell (two birds with one stone?) to get rid of them for some reason? Have you thought of that?

In short: instead of assuming that war taught the goddess deception and point out an inconsistency with their behavior, I would rather try to look for a possible reason for why they don't seem to know about being tricked and such.

too much text. idontreadmuch.
yes, i'm annoyed if goddess is the only thing being introduced in the development. there is vintage too! and for the story to progress smoothly, dumbing down the goddesses is quite acceptable. it would be disastrous for wakaki if the goddesses show so much intelligence. laugh

I agree with log892173 theory-crafting mostly, it's how I was seeing it.

However, to go back to OP I think it's really just a... "perception" from one side to another as to what a god/goddess is. You can believe there is MULTIPLE gods with different intelligence, personalities, ect. For instance I can go into Egyptian gods, Rome/Greek gods, Viking gods, Hinduism... there's many more I could name several others. So if you want to look at it this way it's fine.

The other way is an all-powerful all-knowing one god.. which this isn't it. Yet, you COULD picture the goddesses as angels, and angels are shown to have various intelligence, emotions, personalities, ect. So if you rather it say goddesses are all angels (they are growing wings and a halo for crying out loud) then look at it that way.

Whichever way you see it, you can't say you know that the gods/goddesses should be smarter. Mainly because we don't know... and so the only real thing we can do is perceive, imagine, basically guess what they are, how they act, and so on.

I find it interesting that they went this route. All knowing gods would be boring, why have the (self-proclaimed) capture God in the story at all once he awakens them? This is going to be a funny harem now, and he has hardly any interest in them to begin with which makes it even funnier.

So... to the OP. Sorry you're not enjoying the more recent arc, hope you'll still enjoy the rest of the manga, but if not I can only say I'm sorry and hope you find something better you like.

I actually agreed with the TS on this one. I was like that when Haqua came out, and considering she's the most brilliant in her class, she does act more like Elsie. But after seeing the top student act like a fool, well, what do you expect of the goddesses?
