Ares - Though the story line is really good, I felt that the sketchy art let it down sad

Story always comes first for me. I haven't actually got any manga with 'bad art', but if I did then I wouldn't drop the series solely because of the art. It could be a contributing factor though, or a reason why I rate it lower.

Art's not that important to me, as long as I can tell what the heck is happening. I think I may have dropped a manga or two because they were so confusing, but can't recall any names.

Art is a fundamental aspect when I'm reading manga, so if yes, the art is "bad" and I can't get used to it, I will drop it.

Random example I can think of would be Koi Kaze. Tried it, but the art put me off, so I haven't read it since.

I used to not start a series unless the art looked good, but now I give them a try if the story sounds interesting and I'll put up with the art and try and get used to it. One example which I can remember who's art wasn't very good was Sundome but I still read it all anyway, because I got used to the art style and the story was interesting enough to keep on going.

It's actually the reason why I don't read much Shoujo too. I just don't like the art.

To me, reading manga is not only about the story, but the effort behind the drawings too. It's an art in itself, and I like to spend time looking at the drawings and not only read the text, so I wanna look at the drawings which appeal to me.

Art is suuuper important to me.... if I hate the art, I can't read it! Most of the time, I'd skim through the first chapter if I'm unsure if the art is nice or not... and if I don't like the art, then I wouldn't read it. If the art turns out nice, then I'd go back and read it. I actually dropped D.Gray-man shortly after the art change. I couldn't get used to it. It's not that it's bad, but.... I dunno, I just found it off.

When I see a series cover page that looks bad, and I wouldn't even pick it up.

I like good art and a good story. If there's something I find with nice art but the story is crap, I'd drop it. A series has to have good art and a good story for me to actually read it.

I chose the first option, but my answer would be more "it SHOULD look good" rather than "it MUST look good". Art is an important part of manga, and if it is drawn horribly the mangaka should get an artist or write novels. I sometimes drop the manga if not even the story can keep me around.

Hoshi no Samidare I actually read despite its art, but Level E was dropped (partly because I also wasn't fond of the story).

"bad" art, as in old manga?(Devilman, Mazinger)
well, i don't care, as long as the story is good.
btw, just found this awesome manga today: A Worthless Person. the art is not so good compared to nowadays standard (i think), but i still love it biggrin

Somehow it seems like there's only 2 options instead of 3 (1 and 3 are essentially the same).
Where's the "Can't exactly keep reading when the art is THAT BAD..." option...

But yes, I've dropped series because of art, Ares like someone has mentioned and Law of Ueki is another, I just couldn't stand them, it made me feel all dirty after reading them and I have to wash it away with other series...

Hm.. Well.. I usually only read things who's art seems decent, but I do make exceptions.. For me story and writing is king. Even if the concept is good if the writing (both for dialog and story line) sucks then I'm not going to bother no matter how great the art may be..

On the other hand, I'm pretty used to bad art and I hate dropping things even if I dislike it.. x]]

But yeah, although I want good art it's not the most important thing for me.. So I don't know what to pick for the poll... I'll probably go with "Results" and not bother voting. =x

The art is important but I would read the manga if the story is good like Angel Densetsu (I really hated bad art until I read this manga.)
And I would drop a manga with awesome good art if the story id not at all good.

btw. the poll is more like 2 options rather than 3. 1 and 3 are practically the same.... eek

ps, theirs is a limit in how bad the art can be, for me.

Hmm, I refuse to drop a series. It feels too much like I lost some kinda challenge if I stop reading partway. I have only lost to Chirality and Normal City, and neither was due to art(horrible story line development/translation quality). However, I did choose option three because I have refused to start a series due to horrible art(can't remember the name tho.) It was a manhwa and i scanned the MU page before i read it; noted the artist and remembered I hated that person's art style. I ran away immediately. EDIT: It wasn't Hwang Mi-Ri though, I actually like her art, it is the way she combines story elements that I hate about her.

I see a difference between poor art and bad style. I have no discomfort reading a manga with "poor art" because the artist might just be getting started and I have no problem supporting them on their future improvement, but there are two particular "styles" I abhor(that I can recall at the moment): When the artist includes too much realistic detail like Ressentiment with the fat guy's plumber's crack and sickening body hair, and some artists that use the overly enlarged nostrils and scrunched up faces when expressing emotions(the gorilla face) yet use regular art the rest of the time. mad

While I wont drop a series, I also wont buy the work either. I will not support an artist that I wish to become a homeless bum over releasing another crap series. Additionally, I tend to put them on hold until they finish and blow through them all at once while inebriated. cool

EDIT: I agree w/ lambchopsil(below). Options 1 and 3 are completely different. Huge variation between dropping a series and never starting at all.

In response to accusations that the 1st and 3rd options are basically the same, I did that because the art style in a series can change over time (for better or for worse).
