Just park this whole thing right next to the Bount arc...which was Anime...which at least has the reasonable excuse of wasting time so that the Manga can progress. It's a good thing that he created such a fantastical universe, that he can at least create unique characters (even if they never get any meaningful panel time or development), and that his artwork is so good.
