i can't believe nobody mentioned The World God Only Knows . that should be the one that have risen up these few years
other than that, nothing much really change. Amagami series are the other notable new manga that are making hits. to put it simply, harem manga and dating sims are the trend nowdays. just look at the anime release and pretty much that's what are poppular
EDIT: moeblobs girl groupie are also making headlines like yuru yuri and a channel but scanlation is slow, especially yuru yuri since it's a quarter yearly manga
Oreimo recently got really popular, but whether you find it good or not depends on you. Second Shingeki no Kyojin, and I can't believe no one mentioned Kuragehime.
@Pebble - No don't be ashamed! I do that all the time too (eg: I'm pretty sure Chi's Sweet Home is not made for 19 years ^^). It was more the particular storyline that I had a bit of a problem with as I think I read too much of it when I was younger and now don't like it anymore. Adekan sounds good, thank you.
I've already read The World God Only Knows, wasn't too keen about it and have also already read Durarara!!. I hope manga really hasn't taken a turn for the worse and now only dating sims and harim are popular!! Oreimo - cool, a seinen, I'll take a look. ^^ And Kuragehime is a new genderbender manga involving a hipster? Lol! Yuru Yuri - there are only a select few yuri books that I really read and this one seems at bit to cutesy to me, but thanks. Gamaran - again, I don't read that many of this genre, but if it has a particularly comidical side to it (or it has a original storyline) I might like it, thanks (eg: Beelzebub and One Piece are awesome!)
Well, by popular I mean popular within the baka updates community as I'm lead to believe it has a fair mixture of people from all around the world. I guess I asked for popular manga because I hoped that the manga recommended is reasonably good and has a far amount of readers to back up it's quality. Plus, since I haven't read much over the last 2 years, I'd like to start of with a general overview, then work my way into some more obscure reads. (But if you have any obscure reads that are so good you recommend it to everyone you meet then please, by all means!)
