Dear Fans,

Do you think yaoi would still be popular without the dubious consent theme?

Personally, I love stories where the sex is consensual. I actually find it sexy when the uke is into it without being forced, manipulated, or blackmailed. I hate the stereotypical yaoi story where the seme rapes the uke and then the uke falls in love with him. I'm not saying I hate all stories where there's rape. I think there are ways of writing it that actually makes it interesting and understandable. But for many yaoi manga, rape seems like a shortcut just to quickly get two men together in a sex scene, and later they can justify it as love.

As far as whether yaoi could still be popular with the rape theme, I'm not really sure. There's plenty of people who love the rape scenarios. I also wonder if having the sex be non-consensual is a way of distancing the genre from actually gay sex. After all, the genre is not generally written for a gay audience. (how many times have you read a story where the guy says "I'm not gay, I'm just in love with this one guy") I could be totally off-base, but having rape might be a way of saying, look these guys aren't actually gay so its okay to read about them.

Considering there's countless manga with consensual sex that are popular, I think it would be just fine. There's a few high profile stories containing non-con that have anime adaptations which makes it seem more ubiquitous I suppose.

The whole non-con thing is more likely a result of being molded from similar setups found in some smutty shoujo manga. There's quite a few stories that don't want the woman to appear sexual--like, she's not allowed to have desires or to act upon them (let alone initiate them--dear god, no!!), thus the man has to forcibly act upon them so the readers get action and we're supposed to find that all sexy and whatnot. Right. There's audience overlap between smutty shoujo and BL, thus you'll find some parallels. Often enough, the stories are written so the reader follows/identifies with the uke and you sometimes get the same dubious doesn't initiate sex, followed by clumsily forcing sex plot line. At least we're seeing more departure from this in the recent years, including some BL games that don't force your character to be uke to everyone but the token cutie. Just don't give your support to stories/themes you don't like. My personal favorite is the pursuing uke who makes sure he gets what he wants. biggrin Non-con is there, but the BL genre has no dependency upon it, as we are seeing many stories move away from that tired trope.
