Well, i don't work at a bank, but I had worked with checks and with banks a lot.... The higher chance is a simple human mistake. They either didn't notice, an employee did the mistake and noticed but it's pretending nothing happen to save face, or it's a mistake of someone hight enough on the bank to be stubborn about it.
Yeah, that's kind of what I've been thinking, but of course they're totally unwilling to admit to ANY possibility that it's their fault. I wouldn't be so upset if the same bank (different branch) hadn't lost a counter deposit (made with a teller) last spring!
I see what you're saying about them being just as sure as I am that "I couldn't have made that mistake" but the thing is...if I had somehow not gotten the deposit slip & second check in the envelope, then they had to go SOMEwhere, right??
They didn't turn up in the trash or the area around the ATM (it's in an enclosed area, so they couldn't just blow away & disappear) and the check hasn't been cashed, which makes it pretty darn unlikely that I dropped them at the ATM. They also didn't turn up in my wallet, purse, or pockets. So...where could they have gone??
<sigh> Another mystery I'll probably never know the answer to.
