Is there any manga series with a male protagonist like Vash or Kenshin, where he is insanely strong and has a dark past, but hides it behinds a friendly appearance?

It's been awhile since I've read it but how about Immortal Rain. There's also Trinity Blood.

I've only read the first volume, but I'd say it is better than the anime.

Well it's not exactly what you're looking for but I suggest Gintama. Gintoki is a kick ass samurai with a bo-ken.....I think that's all.

True, but that depends on your morals; like those who believe in capital punishment. I wouldn't call them a bad guy if they killed those people in mangas that commit crimes and are villains(rape, swindle, murder, and other nasty things).

Well, I would say Guts from Berserk. But he isn't exactly nice.
