For those that haven't noticed, the OP seems to have made his/her choice already.

Thanks for all the help guys. I have decided to get an toshiba satelite p775 laptop with 6gb ram and below $1000 since my family plan to get me a new one in two years. biggrin

@chineserider
One thing to note: Many new laptops come with a crapload of OEM bloatware. You know, those useless apps like McAfee/Norton free-trials, useless media-centers...etc, which tend to create a lot of cruft over a period of time. If performance is your main schling, I suggest you wipe everything and do a fresh install of Win7 (or whatever OS).

So what operating system are you using now to post on this thread? Linux?

I'm typing this from a partition running Solaris 11 currently.... But yes, I run Linux or BSD distributions on all my rigs.

No. Just....NO.

Also, Macs generally don't get viruses because no one gives a shit about them - not even virus makers.

I thought it was pity, that they had suffered enough.

It depends on what you want to do with it.
If it's a gaming laptop, best would be from Alienware, you choose which model.
For normal school work, photos, manga reading, chatting, buy Sony Waio, Dell, Acer; model choose by yourself.
If it's mainly for work, IBM Thinkpad, something from Dell or Acer.
If you're used to Window 7, WIn Xp, choose the same system. Mac is a bit different, but one would get familiar with it eventually, like me. Now make me use window and it will takes a bit longer than usual.

Please don't jump immediately to Macbook. I have a Mac myself, but that's because I like to work with PS5, graphic design etc, the quality of the photos is indeed amazing. On the other hand, you have to download everything which is specialized for Mac AND no games! ( online or offline, there's the Mac version but who cares) So if you don't really need it, don't listen to those who have no clear idea about the matter and don't waste your money just to look cool.
Although, if you have an iPhone or iPod, a Mac's not a bad choice, since everything goes with each other smoothly. Some people have problems with iTunes.

Since you've already decided what to choose, this post is rather meaningless, but it's for anybody who's interested.

Photoshop produces the exact same quality output under either MS Windows or Mac OSX (and even Linux or BSD under Wine emulation, for that matter). A Macbook don't mean squat to Photoshop's image output quality- there might have been a case if it were the old days before Apple adopted Intel x86, but not anymore. And please, don't bother whining with the standard "but my MacBook Airhole has a better screen," 'cause no serious designer relies on a laptop monitor for color-critical work. They all plug em to big-ass external Eizo monitors that are capable of displaying the full Adobe-RGB gamut.

Also...don't go out throwing Alienware recommendations like you actually know what you're talking about. The dude's got a budget - I doubt he'd spend extra cash on things he doesn't really need.

Either way, OP has already decided. This thread should already be locked.

@G-17
A clean install is a pretty good idea, especially since my laptop is suddenly saying that I don't have a genuine copy of Windows.
sad

I've had that, and my computer crashed horribly to the point where it needed a new hard drive and an new motherboard roll eyes . Mine also had problems starting up, so if yours doesn't, it's probably not that bad.
I was told by the helpdesk people that "the problem you're experiencing was probably caused by a recent software update for Windows, and it happens more often". You should probably contact Microsoft; that way you might not have to re-install Windows.
If you don't mind re-installing, using the recovery DVD will also work (which is probably easier, because it takes ages before you get to talk to an actual person).
