I'm going to go with "it depends on the series." However at the same time, if the main guy is a complete jerk, all around horrible person, not even remotely likeable and/or abusive, then I won't be reading the manga long enough to find out who she actually ends up with. I'll just assume "that's the guy" and stop reading for no reason other than that I cannot cheer on that relationship.

The few times I've seen the main heroine end up with what was essentially the secondary guy, the main guy either died during the course of the manga or had some horrible, incurable disease such that he's probably going to die off screen during the epilogue if there is one. This topic also has me wondering why is it that I have never seen the secondary guy give up on the main heroine at some point and hook up with another girl?

I mean, there's tons of shoujo out there, so it really depends.

I really want the heroine to get with the secondy when:

A. The main guy doesn't reciprocate the heroine's feelings until like that last moment and up until then the second guy is crushing on her/dates her, basically is actually there for her. I just can't understand how a heroine can continue loving a guy who shows 0 interest while there's a perfectly good guy that loves her there and then.

B. The main guy is a yandere/borderline rapist asshole and the second guy is a blonde headed sweetheart.

However usually I will prefer the main guy it being that there was probably more character development between him and the heroine.

I don't think hair color should matter. smile I mean that if the main guy who is a yandere/borderline rapist asshole is a blonde hotty but the secondary guy is very sweet but is a ginger, we shouldn't be thinking it's okay in that case.

I doubt I’d be happier if the heroine ended up with the second guy (and sometimes the second guy is so much better) but I can tell you that I wouldn’t forget it if it happened. I’ve read my fair share of romance mangas and I have yet to stumble upon one where the girl chooses the second guy.

Depends on the personality of both guys. Can't judge based on that ahah.

I am incapable of caring about "shipping" and most romances are clear cases form the start I must add. If the "second guy ending" is how the story was originally plotted and build up then YES as a narrative must reach its unenviable conclusion. If it´s a stunt then NO.

It woul ...

Exactly! Must be the reason why I hated Hirunaka no Ryuusei so much, the build and the sudden change is pathetic and well, badly executed.

Probably reading the wrong ones. I can name quite a few. They're super rare, but they're out there smile

I used to be annoyed when the 1st guy was indecisive or a jerk, for example in Bokura Ga Ita. But as time passed by, the 2nd guy being a goody-two-shoes or the masochist type got on my nerves too. Vampire Knight is what describes my feeling. Those overused formulas made me drop several series.

Now my experience tells me it's a matter of compatibility between characters, personal liking, and congruence.

For the first point, I'll mention Cat Street. I can't recall any other series with that smooth and subtle romance. There was a particular scene that made me wish a certain ending, and I got lucky. I saw traces of love and chemistry.

Second, in Skip Beat I'm not very fond of Ren, no matter how much I try. Sho is kinda jerky, however his personality shades make him more interesting. But the only one capable of making me laugh is the dumb Reino --sadly just a side character sad

Third, in series like Totsuzen Desu ga, Ashita Kekkon Shimasu I can't stand the ideals incompatibility. Josei characters commonly force themselves into relationships that totally oppose their values. It's supposed to be realistic, but I assume a steady grown woman ... whatever.

Right now, my pet peeve is the neglected womanizer. He isn't given any credit for leaving all the girls and be brave to confess his love. Girls usually end up with the boring version guy who didn't lay a finger out of respect. Bah! (Looking at you Shiraishi Yuki mad )
