So I was just browsing some manga and as usual, avoiding the ones with low ratings or poor comments.
And it got me thinking: am I missing a masterpiece here?

A lot of people may think it's bad, but perhaps for me this could turn out to be the best manga I've ever read?

So I was wondering - is there a manga you've read and loved and been surprised at how poorly rated it is?
Would be interesting to see what comes up. I'll give it a read and see if I agree ^_^

I took his post as requesting series that are rated low here rather than a perceived notion of low popularity.

Series that follow are collected from series I have read and have a low rating on the site... though... not sure how low you think is low. All are 6.9 and below:
Kodomo no Kodomo
Black Coffee
A Serow's Deadly Fall
M
Blow-Up
Fat
City in the Sea
Extracurricular Lessons
At Na-chan's
Boiling Head
Visitors
Endless Narcissus

Some are better than others and all but two are oneshots.

Thanks for the recommendations.

It seemed like the kind of post nobody would have done before...

I wasn't really asking for recommendations of manga people think are under-rated and should have more popularity like widely read manga that a lot of people know of.

I was just wondering whether people had read a manga, thought it was really good and been shocked at how low other people had rated it.
I was interested to read such manga from other people's experiences.

As for how low, definitely lower than 7. Probably lower than 6 would be better.
I just realised that I'd always been avoiding manga lower than 7 rating and thought that actually, I sometimes disagree with other people. So maybe I would disagree with these as well.

I was going to post everything by MATSUNAGA Toyokazu, but recently it looks like a lot more people have been reading and enjoying his stuff but poor little Paperakyu.

Kirisuke and Johnny, The Slaying of 499
The Family Zoo

Anything with both extreme high and low scores has proven to be absolutely amazing or at least really original and interesting.

Like I said in this thread, I don't trust the rating system at all. Anyone can vote, even if they don't pretend to have read a title, at least.

A lot of people seem to automatically down-vote series tagged as ecchi and/or harem, as well as lolicon-themed manga, despite not necessarily showing graphic content, such as one of my favorite titles, Mon Seul (My Only), where 1-voters outnumber 10-voters, just because it brilliantly touched some sensibilities. Although I haven't read (or voted) it myself, another ridiculous example is Twilight, a manga that has more lowest votes than how many have added it to their completed and reading lists, combined.

So to answer your question, yes, you are definitely missing some great works. Just read the description, genres, and maybe categories and comments (since they have more personality than numerical votes, and you can see the lame reasons sometimes for hating a title). Then, if there is a possibility that you may like something, read the first chapter and decide yourself.

Though a lot of the recommendations so far aren't really my genre, I'm open to reading other stuff. Especially since I've been running out of manga lately. Perhaps I should start on seinen and the less ecchi side of ecchi...

Have just started reading an ongoing manga called kaizoku to ningyo which has been rated 2.5/5 and I can't for the life of me understand why.

And I've found that manga by Kayono tends to get some really bad ratings but I've enjoyed quite a lot of her works.

As for twilight I can definitely imagine that people would just go to it and give it a low rating. People tend to like it or dislike it but what's with taking each end to the extreme?

Looking through my lists, I find very few things I've read that get under a 7.0 and don't deserve it. The only one I could find that didn't was Saitama Chainsaw Shoujo, which was rather ridiculous, but I enjoyed well enough.

Kyuuketsuki to Boku - This is very short which, I think, is why the rating is so low.
The End in Common Ruin - A short story about two twins.
Dirty Work - Nice and twisted.

let's say 7,7 is low....

masterpieces:
arigatou
narutaru
sakuran
omukae desu.

I love and don't get it why it's so low:
the end
brothers
yuuhi romance
dragon head
akaku saku koe
here is greenwood

and these I think should get more:
believers
kilico
kokumin quiz

Yay thanks for the recommendations. 7.7 isn't a bad rating really but once you start leaving the seven region it begs the question, is this manga any good.

I just read a manga called Woman in the man
I thought it was alright, got some pretty poor ratings though.

I'll edit this post later with any more manga I read with poor ratings that you lot didn't recommend for me ^^

I'm not quite down with Arigatou being a masterpiece, but that's more a personal thing. It's good, no doubt about that.

Sakuran is so totally awesome that it's simply impossible it didn't get a continuation. Maybe when she gets less busy? One can always hope.

Other than that, Believers is totally awesome, and the best Yamamoto that's been scanlated so far.

I remember having been surprised with the low rating of Maniattemasu! I mean, it's not a masterpiece or anything, but it's quite entertaining and different from the usual shoujo stuff. Now the rating is around 7, which is not that bad, but judging from the comments many people don't realize it is a parody which ridicules and exaggerates most common shoujo clichés.
