I heard some nerd say this shortly after the 7th book came out on some stupid news show. I thought it was a ridiculous statement, what do you think.

Oh and I meant to put a question mark after JK Rowling = Shakespear

Oh and this may never come up, but before go to bed i want to make it very clear that I think the harry potter books are the literary equivalent to the sequels of nightmare on elm street

Hell no.

Harry Potter is a hyped up, boring, insignificant literary work in the league of the Goosebumps series -_- and can hardly be called Shakespearean nor is it even good enough to be called "good"

No

give me wheel of time, Conan chronicles or LOTR series any day of the week. HP was good, but not like that.

Harry Potter is a good series of novels, but it's nowhere near a literary masterpiece.

No, for crying out loud!

Shakespear was an artist, the level of his abilities was so high, that Rowling should apologise everyone for that comparison.

Anyway, why even compare popular books for minors with high-class dramas? confused

I think, that William Wharton and Jonathan Carroll have some chances on becoming legends...

did anyone in Shakespear's time ever thought how he will be thought in the future? NO.
we never know what will happpen in the future, and considering the fact that our languages WILL change and develop, the harry potter books might very well be remembered for generations and considered as good as Shakespear.

never heard of William Wharton and Jonathan Carroll.

Who knows? I only know that JK Rowling and her "Harry Potter" are already studied at university level in the best university here in Ireland and other colleges also introduce her works into their curriculum. So the answer is maybe.

Was Shakespeare trying to create art? Or was he just making entertainment?

You're kidding right ?
you've got to be completely retarded to believe just even a single second that Rowling can compare herself to Shakespeare .

1- she has only created HP so far while Shakespeare bequeathed us several masterpiece like the War of the Rose (Richard II - Henry IV part 1 and 2 - Henry V
and the second quadrilogy Henry VI part 1 , 2 et 3 and Richard III) and his world known dramas (Romeo and Juliet , Othello , Hamlet ,etc.. ) .... I am not even talking about his unfairly underatted comedies that are juste delicious ( as you like it is maybe my favorite play)
2- Shakespeare also produced very erotic poems that are highly regarded
3- if Shakespear produced some secund rate plays (i never liked cymbeline , the merry wive of widows or pericles for instance . Titus andronicus appears to me more like a slaughter than anything else even if it's not bad . And measure for measure doesn't raise any excitation....) any of his best plays is far far far above the best HP in terms of dramatic, writing , thematics..... I'd like to meet any lines of Rowling that can be compared to something so meaningful like "a poor egyptian yet" in Antonius and Cleopatra wich can have something like 4 different meanings . It's obvious for me as i'm french and that any proper translation is impossible! I'm still looking for character as complex as Henry V who can be either seen as the epitome of a king or a despicable and sly character . I never found any images as beautiful as those in King Lear ,true dark diamonds of madness and despair . And the whole set of the war of rose make HP ridiculous in terms of dramatics while it takes far less pages ....
Let's be clear : Rowling has no idea whatsoever of "economy" since she created so unsignificant characters , meaningless spells and events and fails in creating a single valuable character : none of her "heroes" , "traitors" and "villains" have a really unique feature that would distinguish him in the litteracy . She has wrote thousands of pages to render us eventually a very common story about the power of love ....If she had made the made thing with half the pages she used it would have been decent I guess but no more . The actual result is crappy and a fucking lost of time . 3400 pages for a so common story....

It's not even a good book for children ... You want to help them ? give them to read the treasure island , white fang , dr jekyll and mister hyde or any books from walter scott , stevenson , jack london , and others.... They wrote very good and strong stories with much less pages .
If you want contempory writers for youngs (and the others ... biggrin ) roal dalh or danniel pennac has written some books much more meaningful about memories and childhood.

5-So many adaptation of Shakespear works have been made that it proves that he 's speaking an universal language : guys like Kurosawa , a japanese !!!, have produced masterpieces like Castle of the spider or Ran , peoples like Goethe have even acknowledged his superiority and searched ground for inspiration in his work . We have hundreds of adaptation of his works very different as he has dealt with a lot of themes and a lot of interpertration can be made .
And i'm a french and shakespear is one of my favourite author while I found very boring the reading of the 7 fucking tome of this extremely over estimed saga.

Something of a silly topic really. Only time will tell, and we will all be dead before that time comes.

Harry potter is popular, just like many many other popular, books and movies, if harry potter was to be regarded as much as shakespear, then so will another thousand books out there ^^

look before anything, i came here reading the title and fully intending to say 'hell no' but reading the comments... ghinzdra covers it really.

the problem are the comments that hate on the whole series like its worthless crap. yes it ended up as a story about the power of love (lame) yes even her best supporters said rowling needed to improve her romance writing skill (ginny, where did that come from? really lame) and lots of other problems.

yet what you should keep in mind is that this is the first work (attempt) of a person who did not study this and yet achieved such a huge popularity and hype as was thought impossible in this age of video games and tv. the first book was truly magic and that stayed on most of the series.

even shakespear started small. not that i'm saying she will be like him (refer to top of post) but no matter what your personal feelings, what she did is incredible.

J.K.Rowling is no where near Shakespeare.....and you spelled Shakespeare wrong in the title.....

Rowling's Harry Potter have the reading level of a 4th grader. There is nothing but action. There's no rhyme, no pun, it's those books you read for entertainment.....

Maybe you should try to read some of Shakespeare's work and then compare these two yourself so you don't have to listen to some 'nerd'

Ane by the way, Universities also study Star Trek, Star War, even Alien books. They study it not because these are masterpiece, but these are a social phenomenon, like Harry Potter.
