Is Yuta's sister dead or just gone missing?
Even though they say she and her husband are just missing it seems that theyre dead to me.

Missing isn't dead, but they treat them as dead until proven otherwise. I'll be really sad if they find their bodies and prove their dead. I actually hold out hope that their still alive just stranded.

Even the manga doesn't really elaborate on their condition...

Papa no Iukoto o Kikinasai original manga and anime they are basically dead as in both versions they had a funeral service for them. It is highly unlikely there will be any survivors in a plane crash. Missing can also mean there were bodies but beyond recognition and I am assuming this might be the case since they already had a funeral service for both of them. I am not sure about the novel but in the anime they are definately gone otherwise they wouldn't of gone as far as who is going to adopt who. But you never know the writer might pull a 180 and come up a somewhat ridulous way on how they survived which is also likely since this is also a light hearted manga.

Iirc he has a dream in the novel about them surviving the crash and living in an African village somewhere, though admittedly it's been a couple months and I might just be fabricating the memory.

Obviously that doesn't present anything concrete, but I'm sure the author's toying with the idea of them coming back towards the end of the story. Otherwise they'd have died more discerningly. This is fiction, after all.

I think the moral is pointing towards Yuuta selflessly doing the same for the girls as his sister did for him when their parents died for them to stay together and go through the same hardships his sister went through for him. So I think it really wouldn't mattered if they lived or died but would be nice if they do live as long as it isn't something ridiculous.

You realize that this is a comedy and not a drama manga/anime/novel so theres like a 10% chance, being generous, that they are actually dead, because most comedies wouldnt pull that kind of stuff unless labelled drama and/or tragedy on the genres as well.

Its only been confirmed they are missing not dead, but not much else is revealed, I suspect the author intentionally did this to pave way for when he/she finally decides to either kill them off or reveal they are alive.

Of course I would much rather they were found alive, though that probably won't happen until the series is more near the end.

This series does like to push people's buttons but it also swings towards saccharine sweetness at times so I would give it a 50/50 chance at this point. Though I doubt it would happen, it would be interesting to see an instance where only one of the parents managed to survived.

They arent dead in the manga or anime, the funeral service is done because they believe them to be dead since its not likely to survive something like that and felt it as something that was needed to be done, if someone is missing in something like that u dont wait for years to hold off a funeral.
