I don't know why people would compare Claymore with Berserk...I'd say Ubel Blatt would be more comparable with Berserk

personally I like Claymore better than Berserk....(maybe its got something to do with Berserk not having much releases in the past year or so....or maybe I just like watching girls with huge claymores slicing through yoma meat)

They're both good mangas, but they're different.
Personally, I like Claymore a lot more than Berserk.. =\ When I started reading Claymore, I literally could not put it down until I was up to whatever chapter it's on now. I started reading Berserk and didn't get past chapter 7 or so. I'll pick it up again later because I know it's a much loved manga on MU. It's just that the main guy is so sick in the mind that it scares me. Plus I don't really know what's going on (though I guess it's just because I haven't read enough), whereas in Claymore, it was easier to understand. and I like the art in Claymore better. =p

I've never read Berserk, but I love Claymore, even though I've only read 12 chapters.

this is really an apples and oranges type of comparison. sure both are epic fantasies and such, but honestly the two can't really be compared. the character interactions, plot, and everything in between vary. and neither one of them is weaker than the other imo. if your saying one is better than another it really just amounts to nitpicking on a particular one then. cause honestly there is a large amount of good points that each both have.

yeah i don't like reading 1 chapter 1 week. but at the rate this manga is going, 6 chapters in 1year...

here's hoping for Berserk to finally kick into high gear!!!!

you say that because the first 2volumes (or 3) of Berserk is feels like its going nowhere, its almost like hogwash. But don't get fooled because it's a prelude of good things to come!

On the other hand, Claymore has a linear progressive start so there's no room for confusion as to what the heck is this manga all about (i.e. Berserk).

Berserk and CLaymore have different target audiences though so it could be that younger teens tend to dig claymore more than berserk and us older (*cough*) generations prefer Berserk.

Love both, what more can i say? Berserk is currently a lot more Epic, but that could be because it's longer. I hope Claymore continues to be as great as it has been, and the story becomes more expansive later on.

@Avp,
true words. For some reasons series like Berserk seem to produce hordes of Hardcore fans who like afterwords to tell you that if somehow you dislike it, there must be something wrong in YOU.
That kind of conceited readers tend to annoy me. Now I think that claymore is only a manga for teens, personally, dialogues are flat character development is very poor, plot has nothing special.Berserk for me is a very good Manga, however it is repetitive no matter what the fan hordes say. He used the same sceenwriting tools over and over. however apart from some fillers, it did not fail to produce that pathos which ultimately is the best quality of this Manga, in my humble opinion.
As for the script, berserk is far behind a lot of western comics, especially those produced by Vertigo, and many mangas as well.
Ciao

I'm a proud fan of Berserk.

I say there's something wrong with people who rate it "1" , because the art alone worth some points...
People can not like Berserk, and that's fine with me.
But reading one volume, or worse, one chapter froma series with 30+ volumes over those many years is just degrading for the manga.
Berserk has its flaws, but it's still amazing.

You can stay with your comics, as I see you are a fan of them, as much as I and other people are fans of Berserk.

Nightswan,
you probably did not get the meaning of my post, as my current berserk rating is a 9 (second in my list as I only gave 1 10). I also read at least 10 times every single volume, and I own them in 2 different editions, most in italian and some in english, I also read some numbers in spanish and german.
What I mean is this, very often when somebody criticzes berserk he often gets moody remarks as this:
"You can stay with your comics, as I see you are a fan of them, as much as I and other people are fans of Berserk."
which should be definitely be avoided as criticism always improves our understanding of a work of art. Anyhow I guess that most people making these remarks or worse, turn into conceited manga professors must be in a very young age.
Criticism does not take anything away from your favourite work of art, it actually enriches it, even if you disagree and even when it is clearly outplaced.
Besides, though you said some reasonable things in your post, that last remarksreally makes you "only" a fan, as you most likely don't even know the works I am talking about, whereas I have read berserk plenty of times.
It is amazing I agree, however Berserk is repetitive and that is a fact, even though for a series 7000 pages long itis nearly impossible not to repeat itself now and then.
The sense of what I wrote is that it annoyes me when I see these mother-in-law like replies aggressing anybody who dislikes the manga or states an opinion about it to which fans disagree.
Nothing personal,
Ciao

@darkgenio
It's true I don't know those works~
I didn't phrase it right, sorry... I meant that you compare different things...
And if you like them, it's all the same for me (fine).
It sounded bad, I see that now>.<

Didn't think you meant only to those hardcore fans, as I'm an eager fan, and probably close to those "hordes" (since I'll forgive every flaw in Berserk).
Kind of hit me personally. no

that was a nice reply, thanks.

I would categorize fans like this:

Normal Reader: you like the manga or comic, but don't give it too much thought

Fan: You love the manga and wait eagerly for the new release. You don't like other people talking bad about it but you can live with it.

Hardcore fan: That Mangaka is your Idol, and those who dislike that work are simply poor retards. When you hear somebody criticize that work you feel your back itch and a sudden desire of kicking that person's ass.

Just kidding, though in my life (being well over 30)I have been all of them for some works wink

I have never read Berserk and honestly have almost no interest in it.

Claymore is my favorite manga.

yeah, comparing claymore to berserk just isn't plausible. When comparing an epic manga, you need to compare it to another manga on the epic scale, like Shin Angyo Onshi. Though i am not saying claymore isn't a great manga, it's like asking a fanboy who he would win in a fight, luffy or naruto. two differnt worlds that should never, ever cross. but in full honesty, i think that claymore can't compare to Berserk in terms of scope.

however, i agree with all that berserk isn't perfect, i mean, how many times can we see Gatts cut through an army of demonic warriors to an inch of his life where he is then forced to use the berserk armor and grind his bones to dust. Too many times i tell you.

Hi there smile

At the beginning of the thread admin almost locked it for its pointlessness. Why create threads like that?

...Hehe, because some uneducated noobs like me can pick up some more interesting tiles on the way to the last page of the thread, hoping for something at least remotely similar to Bersek phenomenon smile wink grin

I'm definitely gonna try Claymore and Shin Angyo Onshi, and thank you all for providing me tiny bits of info as to what should I expect.

Berserk just killed me. Changed my life. I couldn't believe that I'm reading such a masterpiece. And the best thing is: biggrin

Warning, minor deformed spoilers for the beginning of the Berserk saga

- few years ago my net friend Freak recommended Berserk to me. I slowly trotted through first several volumes, and it didn't bring me any joy. I was like "oh, a supa-dupa-mega-cool hero. What a poor quality drawings and uneven style. Oh, now he fights a snake-guy. Yawn. What a surprise, he killed him. Androgynal elf. Oh, a slug guy. Yawn. ... ... ... Ah, I see, now mangaka struggles for ideas and has thrown me into narcotic vision of some god-hand guys. Seriously, gonna stop reading in a moment. Oh, a change? Ah, retrospection. Ok, so he's a kid. Nobody loves him. So he fights for survival. Yawn. Oh, man wtf? This is such a cliche! Big guy raped a small guy so he became a twisted adult. Sheesh, enough of that soap-opera crap!"

or like DragonFireMule nicely put it:
Quote from Dragonfiremule
Well,
Berserk, I didn't like at all, although I can't remember why... I shall try to reread it I suppose.
OH, now I remember. Come on, getting teleported by an egg into some random demon world and being beaten up and stuff by an unbeatable enemy then somehow beating him(or was it just escaping?), seriously. ANNOYING. (If I remember correctly. This might be a different manga though.l Its been years since I read Beserk.)

...So I told my friend that he's a dumbass and I stopped reading it. roll eyes
About half a year later we were talking, Berserk came up, and obviously he started to praise it, and I obviously laughed at him.
So he got annoyed a bit and asked where exactly I stopped reading. When I've told him, he replied that I've left the manga at the worst possible moment. He said that seriously, ten pages later I couldn't stop reading. Drawing style changes, story changes, and it all blows one's brain out.
With a bit of "meh, whatever, let's see then so I can laugh some more" I've tried again, and I WON'T REGRET IT FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.

...I don't know what's to it, maybe because for many years I was in medieval combat societies. I was swinging with heavy sword myself, and maybe that's why this sheer impossibility of existing such a person as Guts catapulted my mind into some other dimension, don't know.
It's epic. Better than Lord Of The Rings (my no.1 ever since I was 13), better than Sapkowski.

It changed me. I've learned of emotions I wouldn't even be able to imagine. New meaning of hate, love and sacrifice.

...And I couldn't believe how on earth is that possible? How some guy (one guy to that) from Japan could create such unbelievable yet totally convincing medley of medieval fantasy world?
I mean, we have knights, demons, magic, all those things convincingly put into Dark Ages period, yet none of them are even remotely similar to standard orcs, dwarves and Knights of the Round Table clichés so typical in nowadays literature. Berserk just hit me its freshness - when I've learned from Shierke what magic in Berserk's world looks like I thought that now I can die happy biggrin It's sort of the same motive of standard witchcraft through taking power from some ethereal beings, so I guess we all should just know it. Yet, every instance of Shierke's spellcraft was so unexpected and astonishing, I can't really describe it, it was like I was re-discovering some ancient wisdom, which shreds of I've heard as a little child from my grandmother and her friends. It was completely fresh, yet still striking familiar tune in my soul at the same time. And listening to Dark Tranquility (mainly), with a bit of In Flames, All That Remains ("This calling" when I was watching Guts' fights to find Caska is another thing to remember) and Trivium was a perfect background ^^

Eh, nevermind, sorry 'bout that, I just started and couldn't stop bigrazz
I guess just read it and see for yourself.

As for the wait. Well, I generally read it once a year. I don't mind waiting, it can end even in twenty years from now, providing it will end normally and not due to the death of the author. I'm trying not to think about it too often, and I guess it works. I'll wait, no problem with that and god bless Kentaro Miura with a long and creative life for eternity!
