Hi, to members who play rpgs, I'm interested in knowing how much time you guys spent to beat the game (with side quests, etc). Personally I tend to level grind a lot, so it usually takes me around 50+ hours to beat the game. Just wondering if that's too much time for a veteran rpg player. Final Fantasy series usually take me around 60 hours, and a bit more for KH games.

I'm confident that is normal, 60+ hours for an rpg is acceptable. I spent 60+ hours playing Persona 4, ffviii and ffx. 40 hours for suikoden 2 and 5. My brother played Disgaea 1 for 300+ hours once. hahaha.

60+ hours it totally normal. I'm at 150+ on Skyrim, and I haven't even finished it yet. After I finished DA : O I had clocked around 115, all told. That's without grinding (which I don't like), but with every side quest I could find/random dungeon exploration/plenty of companion interaction. DA2 took a little less, but still was around 65, I believe. ME1/2 probably took around 60 each, too.

I'd like to give you a valid answer. Sadly, RGP's tend to stop keeping track of your play time at the 999:99 mark...

I'm joking of course.

...

Really.

...

STOP LOOKING AT ME!!

...

Nah, in all seriousness, 60 hours is nothing. I'm pretty sure my Persona 4 play time is in the 400 hour range. That may seem like a disturbing number, but really it's just a game I play while I'm using the elliptical (it's easy to play with one hand [get your mind outta the gutter]). And those sessions last for two hours, so...

The real disturbing play time I've achieved is in Final Fantasy X. For some reason I felt the need to play though it every week for the span of about half a year. And I never skipped a scene. Probably because it was the first Final Fantasy where I genuinely enjoyed the gameplay, namely, the gameplay didn't consist of 'mash attack to win' like usual.

Even more disturbing is my playtime for Chrono Cross. I blame that on the fact that the game is completely different each time I play it. AND I STILL HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE WHAT TRIGGERS THAT CAMP-FIRE SCENE BEFORE YOU RAID THE MANOR!!! I swear to God I didn't hallucinate that scene! It happened. I saw it. Once. Maybe. WHY WON'T YOU LET ME SEE IT AGAIN!?

...

Anyway, the play time I have for Chrono Cross was... pretty bad.

That's comforting. I can't seem to complete all the side quests in shorter amounts of time, and this is why there are still many rpgs I've yet to finish.

Well I play the rpg game Persona 3. On the PS2 version I have yet to finish the game and with 110+ hours on it, to get all the ultimate weapons, all the personas, obtain the ultimate persona, and defeat the hardest boss will probably take 200+ hr minimum, on the PSP I have already spent 135 hours on it grinding all the characters and trying to get the ultimate persona and I still haven't reached my goal...

I'm never a fan of mindlessly repeating a single task over and over again to get an item drop or exp. I go for a one-shot experience or maybe 1-2 hours of grinding at best. That's why most JRPG I play tend to be around 20-30 hours at most and I lose interest at around the 30th try and play something else. Persona 3 + 15 hours = lost interest, FFXII + 15 hours = lost interest. Now I stop playing on the console all together as I keep having the feeling of having to grind through the games to get the most out of them. I play them for the story and a taste of game mechanic but never for the grind.

I'm really picky on RPGs or just games in general since I have so many of them (300+ on Steam) and there are probably 5 games I spent more than 200 hours on and only 2 of them are RPG. Top of my head:

+Shogun Total War II = 400 hours with only 3 complete domination win Hard, Very Hard and Legendary difficulty on each win.
+Battlefield BC 2 = 200 hours and this is probably the only multiplayer FPS game I have ever played.
+Fallout New Vegas = 200 hours with about 100 hours playing around with the GECK to mod the game
+FFXI = around 9000-10000 hours (play time = 450 days logged in) I sunk into this MMORPG - thankfully I stop playing it now and probably I won't be touching another MMO for a while.
+Company of Heroes = 150-ish. I only play this game for about 1 hour every few days but I keep playing it so it's up to 150 hours now.

60 hours isn't too bad. Personally, I've spent 120+ hours playing skyrim and I still haven't collected all the dragon shouts or explored all of the areas (although I have completed the main story and faction quests). I've probably spent even more time playing Fallout 3 + dlcs and I still haven't finished that either. So depending on the size of the game, spending less than 100 hours isn't outrageous.

I think 50- 60 hours is normal so don't worry about it. If someone completes a typical rpg below that time then he or she probably isn't bothering with the sidequests.

I really hate to level up just for the sake of leveling up[if you cant beat the boss ur probably doing somethign wrong...or its a shitty game/mmo]
i really disslike sidequests that have nothing to do with the story of the game[like in ffxii wtf...the world needs you and all you do is run around picking flowers/killing special enemies/working for an overgrown ugly mouse...and since you cant pick your own personality in most jrpgs it seems odd that the goodguy is spending time doing this weird shit]

so if the game calims to have 200hours of playtime i usualy finish it in around 40hours

I dont mind so much when i play pokemon for the older generation AKA the Disgaea games...coz the games are about lvling up and silly "sidequests"

Depends on how much I like the game. For example for FF7-10, I've easily spent 70+ a piece cuz I wanted to max all the characters and find their secret weapons and such. But for other games such as Skyrim and such, I only spent a lot of time due to the sheer size of the game, but I tend to drop off every now and then due boredom of the game. As for WoW, well it's WoW, I pretty sold my soul to it for 3 years before I quit, lol.

I would say my average is around 70 hours first time playing. It really depends on the game and whether I care about completing side quest and such (it's not worth it with some games). Ususally I only try to complete everything on my second play-through. So around 60-70 hours first time and up to 150 the second confused Combine around 210-220 hours. biggrin

I'm curious about your opinion of Bethesda games then, since open exploration and sidequests are what gets people hooked on the game (the main questlines are usually around 20-40 hrs based on my experiences with fallout 3 and skyrim).

I never exactly time myself (though I guess most games do record your time) or try to 'time-trial' things. The way I see it, the longer you spend playing a game before beating it, the better the value you're getting out of it. laugh
