I recently bought a Sony PRS-T1 reader and I tried to read some of the manga in jpeg format on it (Pastel vol1). I notice it's quite readable but the device is pretty stupid in reading manga in jpeg format since it can't read them in different folders. It just smash them all together into 1 giant folder. So now I'm attempting to turn those jpeg into something an ereader can read. I have a few 'free' options with it:

+Make a pdf file using Acrobat. I notice this device is a little slow in reading pdf but it's readable, just not perfect.

+Make an epub file. This seems very possible but I have no idea which program will be able to do this. I prefer free programs.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Edit: Ok attempt #1 is quite troublesome but workable. The manga is in rar format so I extract them 1st. Then, I used mobipocket creator which seems pretty good at turning a bunch of jpegs into PRC format. I couldn't seem to get it to do anything else other than making PRC files which my ereader can't read. Finally, I used Calibre to turn those prc files into epub which is now readable on my ereader. It's a long process but it seems to work. I'd prefer having something that can convert them directly.

You could try using Mangle.
But bear in mind it was made for converting images for Kindle.
Not sure what the end result would look on an Sony e-reader.

I'd be curious to try this on my Kindle but I'm not sure how any e-reader would handle double page spreads. My thought is the picture would be so small if they compressed it to fit onto the screen that any text would be illegible.

The mangle program doesn't do anything other than renaming the files so Kindle can read them in correct order. I'm talking about turning the manga into something of an ebook instead.

@Geese: It's possible to turn the page orientation to fit the double page but it seems that the Mobipocket creator failed to notice if an image in the bunch is in landscape and need to turn it around. Maybe I can manually edit those images. However, I still find the double page quality to be adequate when I zoom in without the need to edit them.

Don't think so.
Mangle converts the images so they could be read on Kindle without the loss of quality.
I tried loading manga into my Kindle directly and it looks horrible, mangle is a necessity.
With that being said, mangle can be used for making .cbz archives as well. Later you could use Calibre to convert .cbz into .epub.

I have a Nook - I've got a bunch I've put on there in PDF form. I use IrfanView to rename and compile the pages, then JPEGtoPDF to turn it into PDFs.

I know some scanlators actually have PDF's of their releases ready to download too.

It isn't perfect, and with some mangas it is hard to see the smallest print - especally the double page spreads - but it isn't really too bad.



I've never tried any form but PDF. The files are big and I can't do more than two volumes worth of chapters in one file, otherwise it does get too slow, but I have three 8gb cards with pretty much my whole Manga collection, which is great when I get sent out on the road.

I had a Kindle 4 but was constantly frustrated as I was offered manga that I couldn't read. Just now I ordered a Paperwhite. Supposedly it will make it easy to buy and read manga. Report to follow. I'd be interested to hear how it has gone for other people on various devices. Maybe I should have just bought a tablet. We'll see. I will do whatever I have to to get my fix. I'm stupid at electronic stuff. Never even got a tv after the switch to digital.
