Rumour is that Togashi's editor told him that if the manga hoes on hiatus again for more than 6 months they'll end it.

HxH is popular enough to come back again and again, if the current editor decides to not release it anymore then there will be a lot of other companies that would VERY much like to release a popular manga like HxH.

I don't know how it works in Japan but I doubt Togashi would be allowed to continue HxH unchanged with another editor. Anyway I don't think many editors would really want to, it sets a bad example among other things.
I like HxH but frankly those long breaks don't do anything for it, if there's anymore of those I probably won't pick it ever again.
