I doubt it's done by legitimate manga publisher. Why would they need to do that? They have the rights to close down the site in a legal way. They have the copyright law to back them up after all.

I'm pretty sure it was done by someone who randomly chose a site and started hacking it. The same way most computers are compromised.

But yes, a terrible thing to have happen to anyone, especially someone who provides such a valuable service to the community. I assume the server providers are helpless in this attack? Perhaps magicbulletgirl should look into a host that offers a more secure network?

Many people can't understand japanese. So, I'm happy someone scans raw manga and also translate them for free and fast. They get the profits enough to keep the site online.
Insted of paying hackers, they should find a way of selling manga worldwide in different languages and cheaper

Totally agree with that !
The site has been hacked, and the hacker surely deleted the files to put warez instead, for mass distribution. Or the site has been the target of a mass defacement contest (some hackers try to hack the maximum number of sites in the minimum amount of time, it's the case of Genesis Scanlations' site).

Last I spoke to magicbulletgirl, the identity was pretty much obvious -- only one person would want to hack her site and delete scans... and that's her competition for releasing Detective Conan. I'm not going to name names, but the specificity with which files were removed from the server make it obvious that the person in question only cared about Conan, and only one person would do that.

Time for payback?

Yeah, that would solve everything... Let's do something to someone who did nothing but try to deter this so-called "hacker" who just loves all this attention. Putting his accomplishments up on Manga-Updates is probably making him want to stop as well. </sarcasm>

I've heard both sides of this and, quite honestly, I'm satisfied that it's neither/or. It was already proven that the accusation made above--in the past--was completely false. There's a flaw in her server security and someone is exploiting it; they aren't brute-forcing passwords time after time. She needs to talk to her host about having them monitor the server usage to find how they're gaining access--because it's definitely not through the normal login means.

"Hackers" are known to just scan for sites that are susceptible to known exploits--this is nothing new. If her host is running outdated software that's a number of years old, then it's quite possible they are just circumventing the normal login means by using a backdoor.

That said, I hope it gets resolved soon. Either way, let's hope the hacker gets discouraged when no one gives him anymore attention.
