arggghhhhhh......
another movie ripped off again.
nothing against the movie itself, of course
in fact, i heard that the movie was AMAZING and i look forward to watching it myself..
but hearing the basic plot and story made me remember the korean movie titled "jenny, juno". Coincidence? i think not.
They didn't even bother to change the name.
And yes, it is a copied version of the korean movie.
It deals with teenage pregnancy and the like, but of course, no two things can be wholly alike. The parents in the korean version and the american version have different reactions, due to Korea being strictly on the conservative side. REALLY CONSERVATIVE.
And, what's worse, the production companies did not buy the Korean version.
Yes, unlike Lake House (korean equivalent to 'sae wul'), they did not have 'permission'.

If you think about it, quite a few movies have similar or identical themes and storylines to Asian movies.
Examples? Well, of course! One cannot forget The Grude, based on the Japanese movie 'Ju-On' and Pulse.

Anyways, you can check out 'jenny, juno' at crunchyroll.com where they have almost everything that is asian, from japanese movies to korean commericials, from taiwanese dramas to chinese music videos.

And heres an ammateur review at http://itsallaboutmovies.blogspot.com/2005/06/jenny-juno-when-y oure-young-and-in.html

The american version of Juno was the shizniz!

It was absolutely hilarious, the ending was so realistic and not-cliched, and none of it was like overly dramatic.

The humor wasnt stupid like, oh, Harold and Kumar go to white castle. >.<

Just witty dialogue and creative insults! =D

Don't forget that The Condemned completely ripped-off Battle Royale. They even took the exploding collars idea!

@:ladyviollet. Ca't wait till the sequel to Harold and Kumar comes out!

I think that Battle Royale didnt have such a creative story, and its probably the producer of The Condemned just thought of it too 9_9

And harold and kumar 2 looks hilarious XD poor asians and middle easterners.

i think Battle Royale is pretty cool. One of those movies that comments on society in the 'physcological thriller' way.

OMG, i cannot wait for Harold and Kumar 2! BUAHAHA

It's not that Battle Royale had an original story, it's that they were able to twist a story that's been done before into something that is so unbelievable that you're almost required to love it and hate it at the same time. Plus the novel and manga are way better than the film.

Yea, you heard wrong too. Ringu was pretty popular, it's prolly the prequel or sequel that you were talking about... but I'm not too sure either.

Another one is The Eye.

I don't think you can really say a movies is ripped off if the english producer got permission, like The Departed for example. I believe that The Ring and The Grudge received permission no? If Juno was really ripped off from a Korean movie w/o permission I'd be pretty pissed.

EDIT: I'm willing to give Juno the benefit of the doubt after reading this quote from the screenwriter-
"Unbeknownst to me, we had another spiritual cousin out there, a Korean movie called "Jenny, Juno", This time, the cousinry goes one step further and the movie is about--seriously--a pregnant teenager and her cute, sweet boyfriend. (The guy character is named Juno, not the girl.) There's no adoption subplot and apparently the film is otherwise dissimilar to mine, but how fucked up is that? I bring this up because a journalist drilled me about it recently--awkward!--and also because I saw someone on our IMDb board wondering if Juno was a remake of the K-flick. So for the record, 1.) it isn't a remake 2.) I haven't seen 'Jenny, Juno,' though I want to now, and 3.) I don't think anyone would even bat an eye about this if my film was called Jenny. The name Juno is just so darned distinctive that confusion is inevitable"

i guess everyone has differing opinions on the meaning of ripped off.
to me, it simply means 'copied' or 'imitated'.

And i understand that it may be possible that all of this is a coincidence...
but the probability of it being just a coincidence is very slim.

No can really know whether the screenwriter truly did not see the K-movie or not, except for himself.

Yes, the names are really too distinctive to be a mere accident
*by accident, please don't misunderstand the connotations with 'mistake'

Everyone's entitled to their own opinions biggrin

I would be TOTALLy blown away if this was all true...
but how can you prove it to be true?

In the case of the ring and one missed call, the american producers bought the rights to make an english remake of the movie...so it's legal. I dunno about Juno though---as far as I know, the writer is presenting it as her own original work (she/he even won the critic's choice award for it).

I really wanna watch juno too...it's getting amazing reviews. Unfortunately my country doesn't show american movies that aren't "box office hits". ...sad...
