shojou and i thought it's gonna win though i also read yaoi, shonen and josei. well yaoi winning means differently to different people like for me yaoi leading the poll means the yaoi mangakas rejoicing since this prove tat the genre is gaining and gaining popularity in the manga community so they made the right choice in their career, profitable indeed

Wow.
I voted for yaoi, but I seriously didn't expect that it'd win.
I was totally expecting shoujo (Come on, look at those Vampire Knight fangirls.)
And Josei got really low D:

despite being a straight female, I do not understand yaoi at all. why would you want to read a manga about 2 perfectly good-looking guys that would never like a girl (a character a human girl can relate to)? it's unfathomable..

Woman and voted for Seinen. I was sad to see it lose, but completely not surprised that Yaoi and Shoujo beat it out for the top two spots. I was actually avidly watching to see if Hentai would manage to overtake Shounen before the poll ended. So close Hentai!

Despite my initial shock, and blaming of vote splitting, the new poll helps explain the result of the last. I would've expected something closer to a 55-60 percentage for males. But the fact that girls are actually ahead of the game, shows that even were the vote not split, females held more weight.[insert fat-girl joke, for good measure.]
Still though, it reflects heavily on the nature of the people using mangaupdates. This result, along with other factors such as the high quantity of Yaoi releases, and front page news about Yaoi groups, paints a picture, so to speak. It would appear that a large number of Yaoi fans have likely made mangaupdates their primary method of tracking their releases. This probably has a lot to do with the significantly lower popularity of Yaoi among mainstream fans. Yaoi titles garner less attention, and as such, wouldn't be so easy to find plastered all over the rest of the internet. Here, however, fans can track Yaoi groups and their releases, keeping up with their favourite titles regardless.
This seems to speak for the usefulness of mangaupdates as a tool for fans, but likely also for the fact that this website is not nearly as well known as it should be. A shame, really. Regardless, I'd assume that Yaoi's victory can be explained by a relatively larger portion of a niche fandom latching onto a useful tool. Further, I'd speculate that due to the size and nature of said fandom, they're less likely to be complete leeches, and as such more likely to participate in polls and discussions.
Because, even the fangirls need to be honest here. No matter how much you may love that (disgusting)man on man action, the popularity of Yaoi can never, and will never, touch that of titles like Naruto(though come to think of it, Naruto's almost as bad). At any rate, the point I'm really trying to make, is that the poll reflected less on which category was more popular, and more on the type of people involved in the M-U community.
And for the record, I don't mean to offend or insult anyone. I'm merely attempting to analyze what was objectively an odd result.

Eek. *not a yaoi or hentai fan*
Does that automatically delegate me to the "non-Yaoi girl" group?
But actually, that's probably true. MU is mainly girls and "mature readers" (as are most non-shounen manga readers)
(have you seen the amount of hentai at the top of the popular list? D.
