Meh, late one...

bozou writes: The January issue (on sale on December 9) of Ichijinsha's Monthly Comic Rex magazine will reportedly announce that TAKENASHI Eri's Kannagi manga has been placed on hiatus due to the creator's "poor health." The magazine's official website still lists the supernatural romantic comedy for the next issue, but a note from the editors has reportedly replaced the usual manga installment. The note promises that the magazine will provide more details if or when the manga returns.

The manga's story centers around Nagi-sama, a goddess who come to life before an art student when he carves a statue from a Kannagi tree. The anime version just premiered in Japan in October, and fervent interest among the most hardcore fans have led to high prices for even fan club cards. However, the anime has been partially overshadowed by fan controversy over a recent revelation in the manga's installment in the December issue, which was released last month.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
The unexpected "revelation" was the *possibility* that Nagi-sama previously had a boyfriend and may not be a virgin

Damn Japanese otakus, putting the manga on hiatsu, because of such an idiotic reason >< (not gonna spoil it, but their reaction to the story is WAY too stupid >_> )

Shapeshifter, buddy, reread that announcement. I think they are saying that the manga is on hiatus because the mangaka got really sick, not because of fans.

This is hilarious. "Nagi-sama's" divine purity will eventually be soiled by countless doujinshi, anyway...

And Shapeshifter implies that actually the fan controversies have caused the magazine to put it on hiatus and the author, rather than being sick, was forced to re-think part of his story to not let the fans who are yearning to deflower a goddess (in their minds) down. I think.

Yeah but at least then it wouldn't be canon, the whole selling point behind Nagi is that she's a 'pure maiden.' Changing that part of her character would understandably cause distress among her more devoted fans. Lack of foresight on the mangaka's part is the cause for the recent outbursts from fans and likely the cause for the hiatus.

Funny you should mention that. In the report I read, it was apparently the doujinshi crowd that saw most outraged by the revelation. I guess it ruins their poorly thought out, derivative, generic sex plot.

It was indeed pretty daring of Eri Takenashi to create a female main character with a background that involves an intimate relationship. No wonder that most (female) deities of both Japanese shintoism and foreign religions rarely play any role in mainstream manga when too many legends exist that depict them as married, sexually active or outrightly lecherous. Making a divine being a love interest for a human boy - or rather for thousands of boys who prefer to live in two dimensions - certainly requires her to be reduced to a human level which includes judging her by human values. But, evidently, the general opinion of the aforementioned target audience appears to condemn all non-virginal characters per se, not considering the possibility that a deity like Nagi might actually have centuries of life experience and at one point had a pure, moving and possibly tragic love story and that maybe her past beloved's demise will add several layers of depth to all characters and the story itself. No, she just isn't moe enough with a torn hymen.

I'd like to point out, though, that I am slightly annoyed by the previous notion that Nagi needs a vessel to interact with humans, and unless one is specifically made for that purpose (like in the story) she would have had to possess a human, which she's already indicated her disdain for, to have had any relationship. This could mean that the prior relationship is in fact the source of the disdain, and be your tragic story, or her relationship could be with a god, or (and I fear this is most likely the case) a plot hole has appeared within the story.

If I remember correctly, in one of the anime's episodes (I don't remember if the equivalent chapter contained it as well) Nagi - with a slightly sorrowful voice - claims to already have someone she loves. So far I thought that either she really has a divine companion who remains in the god's realm (or the location he is bound to protect etc.) or she had an unrequited love but assuming she really did have a intimate relationship before I would prefer a tragic past (to be honest I really like the pure character types of shounen manga and think that Nagi being a "widow" would fit into this scheme). Anyway, I do not see Kannagi as the kind of manga that I would want to agonize over and rather wait for the scanlations to catch up and hope that the four volumes will shed some light on this matter.

Though, I fear that in this semi-serious manga a plothole, for which Nagi's unwillingness to elaborate on such complex matters and, possibly, in consequence on her own past will be blamed. is very probable.

I hope it does come back and doesn't join the list of other animes or manga who are never finished.

Yeh, that's what I wanted to say, but I just wrote it with fewer words, because I didn't want to spoil. I just don't get how Japanese people think... I mean, it's a 2d imaginary story, with a being that's lived for, possibly, a thousand years. And the otakus don't expect it to have EVER fallen in love? LOL? Anyway, I hope the manga starts running again in the next issue or the one after that. And by the way, I heard a rumor that the mangaka is a woman, so it would be understandable if she got sick from stress after reading all the hate mail she(probably) got...

Eh, I could care less whichever way the mangaka swings in relation to the plot.

I will say that it doesn't make sense for the relationship to have involved any skinship/naughty bits. Considering everything up to this point has indicated that Nagi had no way to even take a physical form prior to Jin's accident. Unless someone cut her down previously and used her trunk as a vessel (RIGHT?) Though I highly doubt the hardcore fans are against it due to reasons of logical precedence. If of course the previous relationship was her interacting on a purely spiritual/watchful level and she happened to fall in love with a human.. Power to her. I've been avoiding the manga purely because I love the way the voices/music/art, and find its quality top-notch. So, until I get to that point to understand the circumstances around the love story, I can't really comment further.

Plus, who wants Nagi x Jin anyway? Pshhh, so cliche.

People, it's Japan. They are all perverts. You can't just understand their minds. I highly doubt that they really care about the story, they just want to make their doujinshi and jerk off to "moe".

Announcement from ComicRex
Regarding the hiatus of “Kannagi”:

We are aware that we have caused the readers of “Kannagi” a great deal of concern through the matter of its suspension.

Takenashi was abruptly struck down by a sudden illness shortly after the manuscript for the December issue of ComicREX was completed, and after this she was immediately hospitalised due to her critical condition; as a result, publication of Kannagi was suspended.

After this, she underwent surgery, which proved successful, and now her condition is favourable and she is moving towards a period of convalescence.

After the publication of the January edition of ComicREX, there were some reports to the effect that “Takenashi has ceased publication due to the calumnies she was subjected to”, but this is not the case.

Takenashi is currently hospitalised, but even so she has expressed a desire to move towards resuming her writing.

We hope that readers will be kind enough to wait whilst she convalesces

No word yet on what upset the otaku more... that the author was in critical condition, or that Nagi-sama had a boyfriendSpoiler link
