As a sort of follow-up, our member Xuan suggested this poll. This one is probably gonna be a lot less common than anime/cartoons, but I've personally heard it more than once. I mean, come on, how do you get confused between something that's a video and something that's on paper?

An easy poll for next week would be to do the manga/comics pairing

You can discuss this poll on our forums here:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=15381

If you wish to suggest poll ideas, go ahead and do so here:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Do you get annoyed when anime is called "cartoon"?
Choices:
Yes, they're different! - votes: 6383 (41%)
Bothers me, but I ignore it - votes: 4000 (25.7%)
But they ARE cartoons! - votes: 1935 (12.4%)
Not bothered at all - votes: 1915 (12.3%)
Have heard it so often that I'm immune - votes: 1337 (8.6%)
There were 15570 total votes.
The poll ended: December 5th 2009

To the people who chose "But they ARE cartoons!", you better be joking...

PS: Good luck to all of you college students with finals. I got 2 on Monday, 1 on Wednesday, and 1 on Friday...

I don't get the joke if someone considers an anime a cartoon. If you consider all animated media to be cartoons, then, for example, Evangelion is as much a cartoon as Spongebob Squarepants.

I consider myself a fan of both anime and manga, but I regularly call anime "cartoons" and manga "comics".

Same here, and that's what I put for the poll.

They're a very similar medium, so does it really matter what they're called?

Of course it matters.. If it got it's own term to be described, then it should be used..

I'm Chinese, and I wouldn't think it matters little, if I was called Vietnamnese, because "we are all yellow"...

Nationalities of people are not the same as entertainment mediums. My question is why we need terms like anime and manga in the first place.

Exactly. Like how people say they bought the CD version of a game when they're usually on DVD's.

Who cares?

I think that is a different situation too. Chinese and Vietnamnese are just english words to describe people from a certain country. They would have their own words to describe themselves.
Anime and manga are just the japanese equivalants of the english cartoon and comic. They are the same thing. I would only use anime or manga if I was trying to specify the style or country of origin.

I think Lambchopsil should have retained a neutral response on this argument it'll obviously cause flaming and trolling.

Why?
I think it would be a sad day when we'd forced to keep our moths shut for fear of discussion.

All animated mediums are not cartoons though. Shows like Family Guy and The Simpsons are not cartoons. Personally, I consider it insulting to refer to anime as cartoons. Cartoons are looked down on as something for children, and worth less than something live action.

As for people calling anime manga they're even more infuriating. I wanted to apply for a manga hatelisting once and asked where it should go since there was no comics section, and the girl said to apply under anime since "they're the same thing."

Uh that's a perception thing. You might think the term "cartoon" refers to something aimed at children specifically, but that's not always the case. And yes, shows like family guy/simpsons/whatever are still cartoons.

Honestly, most people don't read the front page anyways...
And I usually try to give my opinion on the polls

Wouldn't it be more like calling a Chinese person an Asian rather than a Vietnamese?

Well I think they're still the same.
