Back in the day? Geez that makes me feel old. I doubt all the reader sites will die off. The community has gotten used to the taste of the instant gratification that comes with online hosts and will not soon give up on it whether they are regarded as pirating or not. The only way to even blunt the damage now would be to offer a legitimate alternative like the ever crappy CR.

Sun Tzu also said to know our self in order to defeat an enemy.

Based on this quote, i would said, we can still keep going, as long as we do it on the right way , without attracting too much attention from legal force. Why anime and the other software piracy still going on out there when suddenly they make a ruckus about manga? Doesn't it somehow makes you think , whats wrong the distribution of the manga scans?

My Solution:
1. Don't ever host those scanslation manga on the manga online site ever again.
2. Use goddamn IRC , or torrent.
3. If says, there's a licensed manga on US , we can still provide the scanslation by hosting it somewhere OUTSIDE US.
4. DONT BE A GODDAMN LAZY LEECHER , LEARN TO USE IRC OR TORRENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

first off i agree with OP.

second. tap the scanlator market.

one piece official is the answer, i watch all my one piece there, why? because it comes out first. i sit through shitty commercials for thai sauces, and endure terrible quality that japanese TV watchers don't have to, just to watch it first. im sure they are getting more money than they would if there was no internet and they were just selling dvds. example... fuckin pokemon. give people a nibble and they turn into fiends.

just look at the anime market before the internet and after the internet. i used to buy bootleg vhs, that shit was awful and still not exactly legal, but thats all i did. after the internet i could watch any anime i wanted. and then i get all pumped up and buy stupid shit i would never do. HAVE YOU EVER BOUGHT A NENDOROID? gimme a break i got shit that would make a grown man cry. it's not my fault that people can't get with the times. acting like a bunch of old white guys trying to stop the american revolution. people don't want to pay taxes on shit when you're doing absolutely jack squat. seriously. tank quality sucks, people willing to do it for free as long as its on their terms... put the two together and you got a recipe for success. fuckin business noobs. someone please bring up japanese copyright laws so i can laugh in your fuckin face. the people who want to get rid of scanlation are the japanese who are pressuring american publishers to join forces. its their laws, they can change em. its just easier to threaten than to change the business model. MY ANSWER: put pressure on the japanese instead of the other way around. let us translate shit and put it out on a timely manner instead of this wait 3 months shit. buy 5 dollar translations from people who are already doing it for free. and then just blast em out on paper in large quantities to people who are more willing to buy it than to spend hours on the internet. obvious win is not obvious. fuckin lame.

I have a love - hate relationship with manga readers... hate reading online, but for several chapters it's faster to download the images from them than using irc or ddl.

But for new releases, a good irc client makes xdcc faster than any other method, just saving the channel and it's bot... Yep I'm a big LEECH.

An interesting theory but a direct confrontation in this case just isn't desirable. More realistically, a passive resistance would most likely occur. Every time a scanlator gets a take down notice, a new one, hopefully from another country would take their place. The companies can try to stop it but like pirated content on youtube, it will never be permanently erased; only supplanted by easily accessed legitimized versions which in the end should be the goal of every scanlator.

Taking silverado's message to heart. Now I just need to learn how to use an irc...and while that's happening I pray to the heavens that MU will not be taken down. I can't remember EVERY scanlator group by heart XD. I think bunkering down and waiting for the fallout to go stale is the best idea.

I actually see one dark cloud. The online hosts brought in a large influx of new fans who may not have otherwise read scanlations. This invariably encouraged a growth in the scanlation community as a whole. Cutting off online hosts will discourage said growth and most likely reduce the number of active scanlators and their scanlations.

Finally, someone with a brain.

"Onemanga was scum that tried to make profit off of someone elses work. Many of them are making a profit in some way. This site will not be struck down because the LAW is on its side." <<<

agreed with you wholeheartly. Sadly , 80% people here is too damn stupid to use an irc, or torrent.
when i think i'm a loser, i didn't know that there's a lot of more hardcore parasite society than me.
They are just plain lazy, didn't want to think much, example is when i posted in another thread about this case, one of them replied back : " how to use an irc?"

Man, i really hate my own community...too much naruto retard type.

If they take MU down, they would only show they want to kill all scanlations. Finding them would be no problem without it though. Judicious use of google and wiki is all you need. It is the fracturing of the MU community that would be the most devastating effect and even then, ultimately all it would accomplish is creating an even more disgruntled fan base.

This one-person scanlation group is also no longer hosting manga
http://lyrebird.aithine.org/halfbaked/manga.php.

So it's affecting all, not just the major sites. O_O

cr is a horrible example on so many lvl's. horrible translations, quality, service, and every other point "EVERYONE" else has made b4 me. ppl who boast cr do so out of self satisfaction. and me (rather personal) would rather not support most of the companies that produce the series that run on cr, why would i want them to make more of what i dont like, and pay them for it... cr isn't coexisting, its hand outs (naruto, with its length, would never be successful with there dvd sales at $20-25 per 4 episodes)

and if the general population could they would, ive tried with the irc a couple of times not being able to figure it out, dont know about now but it didn't come with a manual, and googling didn't help, also asking for help proves futile more than most can imagine, ppl boast how they can use irc but very few show others how too.

"ease of acess" is not just him...

japanese doujinshi conventions charge 100-400 yen... 1-4 dollars pretty much
and theres no running allowed in japnese conventions, also everyone lines up. this is to say for the major ones, dont know about american ones.

I was a bit worried about it in the beginning, and actually thought about closing down my group all together. However, I won't stop scanlating our licensed series til I receive a cease and desist order. They can't just sue us without a personal warning first. How are they to know I read the update on their policies, lol. I could just be some innocent nub out there XD I do agree though, when we scanlators do go to drop our licensed projects - don't throw a bitch fit. It's not like we WANT to v_v;;

For now, keep everything on the down-low and just enjoy it.

1. overly-obsessive people commit suicide (i'm not recommending it, i just think there are people dumb enough to do it)
2. true otaku will boycott these sites, go irc, torrent, or *channing for manga (moar than likely for hentai, but they do post some like hoshi no samidare on *chan)
3. the income manga sellers will get will plummet. it will not drop, absolutely must plummet for this to work in our favor
4. manga will either become something you can only find online, it will become much cheaper like japan and china, or it will get /b/anned by f*cktards like hillary clinton and we'll still manage to find it
5. confused?
6. we'll see how it goes from there (you thought i was going to say PROFIT!, didn't you?)

First, I think it's worth pointing out that Japan can sell their manga for ~$4 USD because they have a HUGE audience for it; manga in the US is still not anywhere near as popular or widespread as in its homeland. Viz originally launched its Jump and Shojo Beat lines with a lower price point (I think $8-9?) because the series were expected to sell in high. With the drop in US manga sales, they've had to bring these prices back up to the standard $10.

Second, any book priced over $10 US automatically gets discounted (usually at least 10%?) on Amazon.com. Borders and B&N run coupons (B&N also has a 10% membership discount that I know of); the online store Right Stuf runs sales all the time for 33% off titles by particular publishers (I think their regular prices are 25% off retail); if you purchase a yearly membership they offer an additional discount, so you can get up to 40% off your manga (and anime)! So there are definitely options for buying manga without paying the full price. In fact, Right Stuf is offering a sale right now on anything by Viz! I was pretty excited when I saw that the other day.

I'm a huge supporter of buying manga biggrin But I know that I'm lucky to be out of college and have a job, and not everyone is in the same position. So libraries are another (wonderful, wonderful) option—just recently there was a new series I was curious about, but without reading it I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy. I put in a purchase request at my library, since they didn't have the book on shelf, and a day later I got a response that they'd ordered four copies of the first volume—one for my library branch and three more to spread out to other branches. That made me feel pretty good—I didn't have to spend a dime, and my interest resulted in four purchases. If readers all over make requests at their libraries, that alone can contribute a lot to manga growth and sales! (And then I read the book and decided I wanted to buy the series after all, but anyway...)

They got worried only because someone mailed them about it. It's not said the coalition itself mailed them. Actually, I think it's a troll, for a reason or two.

They didn't get C&D.
