choices in the poll are hardly sophisticated and a little too simple. when asked i'd rather answer western, european, german or even just human before "white" comes to mind.

Even though I voted white I wished there were the options "American" or "European". I would have liked to vote European in my case. Even though I am white I consider myself more European than white. I feel sad that some people still feel the need to make such polls - like this one. Why do we still have to divide the world in all sorts of "other than me" to define our world? Rather than being different from black, white, yellow or whatever shouldn't we look at our similarities, our resemblances? All of us are born with a heart, a pair of eyes, legs and arms.. All of us are born with empathy, emotions and that kind of jazz?
Isn't that what matters, what counts? Or am I just nomination myself for the greatest-hippie-award?

People from Iberian peninsula are mostly white, since most of their ancestry is germanic (celts and visigodes, alans and sueves), with a bit of romans and ibers. That is, excluding inmigrants and gipsies (you should add that as 'Roma, gipsy or tsigan' in the poll). 'Hispanic' or 'Latin American' are mostly descendants of mixed European-American Native people, with a bit of African. Except Argentinians (they are mostly of European origins).

It's just a simple question out of curiosity not some big race debate or whatever... (Although some people are making it seem like that.) Besides, even if we are all the same, true unity is when we acknowledge each others differences and accept them, rather than outright ignoring them altogether.

What julia36 said. We had a gender poll so one can argue: we're all human but different shapes: you have a big nose, I have big boobs. It's fun poll to get an idea on who's here on MU. biggrin

If my bubbe had her way I’d be both, but no, religion was never my thing (but I do celebrate Jewish holidays). I come from a really large and old Jewish family, and calling myself white feels… odd. But I guess I am, if only in the eyes off the masses.

"white" is probably an American term anyway... it's probably not used much in Europe now that I think about it...

Ah, true, I didn't consider that "white" is really just an American term... since many Americans have mixed ancestry we just say "white" (or "Caucasian") if we look white, but if we say that we really mean a mix of a bunch of ancestries, mostly European.
I's a simplistic way of thinking about it, but some "white" people in America don't even really know what their ancestry is for sure, they just know they look white.

That'd certainly be useful for those of us who don't have a clue beyond that.

It's very Americanized--right down to ignoring that most people don't go by skin color or such broad-yet-narrow categories. On the other hand, it can be amusing to watch somebody attempt to apply those rules to an albino of African descent...
