I honestly don't want to use this as a poll, but since it is a current event...(And it was suggested by our member firestalker). No formal forum thread for this one because I fear flames.

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related):
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: How long can you last without manga?
Choices:
Less than a day - votes: 2494 (16.3%)
A few days - votes: 4827 (31.5%)
A week or two - votes: 3260 (21.3%)
A month - votes: 1399 (9.1%)
A few months - votes: 1608 (10.5%)
A year - votes: 229 (1.5%)
Years - votes: 423 (2.8%)
Forever - votes: 1096 (7.1%)
There were 15336 total votes.
The poll ended: December 18th 2010

To tell you the truth, I didn't vote because "I don't know" but there's not such an option on the poll biggrin

I think it's too early to tell at this point. So I have no idea.

My answer changed; I can only last without manga for a few days now in my current situation.

Barely noticeable. Only people who are actually believing the trolling that Sankaku is making will vote change completely though. It's not a ban, it's just a regulation and it only applies to Tokyo. Obviously that blog won't tell those because it wouldn't sound as bad if he did!

People who think the bill will "change things completely" should ignore that tabloid site (Sankaku) and take a look at this.

http://dankanemitsu.wordpress.com/2010/12/17/governo r-ishiharas-alternate-universe/

The governor is apparently under the impression that there are a large number of loli rape manga series that are in the hands of children, which obviously isn't true. This legislation is made to combat manga that doesn't exist, so I wouldn't expect to see much change.

Of course the bill isn't a good thing and I don't agree with it, but I don't think things will change much when you consider that what it's supposed to be fighting against isn't even real.

You are correct, but the regulation bans the purchase, sale, or distribution without going through the same processes as "adult" literature. This essentially prevents their sale in mainstream stores and publishing in most non-adult magazines. Also, it only applies to Tokyo, but most of the industry is headquartered in Tokyo and it's their heart. If it happened there, it will happen more broadly soon enough. Even some mangaka have already spoken out that they are being told to change their art (to avoid potential issues, not actually breaking the ban/regulation).

I'm not defending Sankaku, but they clearly denote that the ban only applies to Tokyo - "Tokyo" is in almost every title they reference the bill / soon to be law.

I just read through it quickly. He does seem to view things in a skewed or biased way but that doesn't change the fact that the bill has passed and the wording within the bill is so broad that many normal manga with "ecchi" will have to be moved to the +18 section. There are others who hate manga and otaku, who will try to enforce this whether Ishihara does anything now, since the bill now exists. This type of regulatory bill will never be a stand alone push, those who support the bill will only move onto other prefectures or try to amend the bill so that it is harsher. The people who supported the bill obviously interpret situations in manga in a different way than we do, even as you state that such things don't exist in manga. It's the same argument with video games, many people see games as a form of art while there are others who don't. They interpret games in a different way than those who do.

This is more our own opinions of what will happen as of right now so it's not that big a deal but I'd rather take this seriously than see the bill as a joke. If any of my favorite manga are negatively impacted I would be pretty pissed as I'm sure many fans would. There are plenty of story telling mediums out there whether it's the old fashioned book, blockbuster and indie movies, plain old television shows, classic and new video games, American comic books and anything else you can think of, yet, I've chosen manga and anime as my main story telling medium because I find it most enjoyable. The politicians who approved this bill are condemning those who enjoy manga with stories that they dislike or don't understand. They clearly state this and it should be obvious that if one bill passes they'll try to pass more. I hope I'm wrong but It would be nice if those who enjoy manga would take these type of offenses seriously.

Having read about this on several sites in the last few days, the primary function is to label anything and everything 18+. If this is properly enforced (which I have serious doubts about), most shounen/shoujo manga would be sealed in black bags. (see http://dankanemitsu.wordpress.com/2010/11/24/of-illega l-fictional-marriage-and-harmful-fictional-sex/ and then think about "classic" titles like _Marmalade Boy_) Will this affect the industry? Yes. Will we really have problems getting our hands on the material we want? Maybe in the short term.

It really looks like everybody is flipping out because Ishihara is incredibly unPC and likes to rabblerouse. Would we object so much to preventing 10 year olds from purchasing first-person gang rape computer games if he had posed it differently?

Look, it's great to be passionate and all, but this poll is a little alarming. People who actually think this will completely or profoundly affect the industry factually have no idea what they're talking about- they've just read a summary on one of the biased blogs and come to a sudden conclusion without properly understanding the actually content of the bill itself. And when that amounts to over half the community, an extraordinarily dangerous precedent is set.

Will the bill have an effect? Probably. But it's not going to be a big one. We'll see a couple shounen and shoujo series turn down the fan service. That's about it.

Now, to those who think that something is being banned or that all shounen/shoujo manga is going to be suddenly turned into 18+ material, please, just read the actual content. I'm sure there's an explanation somewhere that doesn't sensationalize things. Look at who is going to be on this committee, and how that committee is going to enforce this Tokyo ordinance. If you look at what's actually happening it would be quite difficult for anything to change significantly.

It is truthfully to early to tell where the bill is taking the industry. If there was a "Dont know" or "Unsure" then I would select that.

Lol yeah. I really wish there was an "I don't know" (or "I don't care"...) option.
