JohnHomos gave the suggestion for our new poll. So for wherever you define as "local", how would you rate your local comics? If you live in Brazil, rate your Brazilian comics. If you live in the US, rate those. Or if you life in China, rate your manhua... And yes, I'm asking you to generalize your experience. You can post on the forum about specifics

You can discuss this poll on our forums here:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=23978

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related):
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Worst trouble you've had because of reading manga
Choices:
Didn't finish my work - votes: 2315 (15%)
My grades started dropping - votes: 2009 (13%)
Overslept because of late-night reading - votes: 4208 (27.3%)
Someone found my "perverted" manga - votes: 727 (4.7%)
Used a lot of money buying it - votes: 1163 (7.5%)
Got a virus on my computer for downloading - votes: 651 (4.2%)
My parents are mad at me - votes: 442 (2.9%)
My friends laugh at me - votes: 350 (2.3%)
Other - votes: 441 (2.9%)
Never had trouble before - votes: 3104 (20.1%)
There were 15410 total votes.
The poll ended: January 29th 2011

Losing some sleep sounds popular. And for those who never had trouble before, you must have really good self-control. And for once, "Other" doesn't have many votes... I'm satisfied with that~

It's kinda a dominoe effect. Oversleeping>didn't finish work>grades start dropping. That's what happened to me.

Interesting new poll. We have local comic books in my home country, and yes I've read a few (pretty good stuff), but they will never be as good as manga smile

The US comics are great, I love Spider-man, and I like Batman, but we have some huge problems that most manga would never have, except maybe series like Doraemon. When a series has no feasible end, the canon states to get very messed up and filled with retcons that leave long time readers scratching their heads wondering why their favorite comic character suddenly can fly, or isn't an orphan, or isn't the only one of his kind anymore..
While many manga end too soon, and many don't end soon enough, at least they have an end.. a goal to reach.
Not to mention, U.S. comics are freaking expensive, with some rating $4 for 8 pages, which is just insane.
On the other hand, US comics tend to be higher quality art (tend to be doesn't mean it is a rule), better quality materials, and some are quite collectible, which manga simply isn't. So they are about the same as manga, but for re-reading purposes, distribution purposes, and over-arching story purposes they just aren't as good as manga in my opinion.

there are some artists in germany trying to draw manga, but I don't think much of the product. to be honest i've read only one german manga, and i liked neither the story nor the art. the art is the main-cause why i don't read them.
there are some western-4koma-like german comics too. they are quite funny.
i voted "I don't know"

good that the worst trouble most people have is only oversleeping smile

I agree with you for the most part, but I think the problem has less to do with the lack of and ending and more to do with a never ending climax. There are some long running comics I read that aren't as bad as Spier-man or the X-Men and that's mostly because they don't keep trying to out do themselves. They have a story arc, things get resolved and the comic returns to "lv 1" where X-Men has a story arc and once it get's resolved everyone level's up like 10 times, so after a few arcs everyone's lv 50 million with the power to explode the universe. Usually in manga they stop at one level up and then spend the rest of the manga getting awesome with that 1 level up. Some of the long running action manga suffer from climax envy like most big American comics and for some reason feel compelled to 1 up themselves. Dragon Ball Z is an example of this.

I enjoy graphic novels here in the States..but I don't like 'em quite as much as I do manga. Mostly because all American graphic novels are always Superhero based with very few exceptions. Where manga, manhua, manhwa, etc has other genres like Slice of Life or what have you. I guess it's the plot driven aspects that I like more about manga. If American authors/artists perhaps made more like Stephen King's Dark Tower series, for example, I'd think they were more equal with manga. If they did more adaptions of normal novels into graphic novels, basically, I'd feel better about them.

They aren't? I'm American and I didn't know that. For the most part they are all about super heroes or vigilantes. Kind of like most Japanese comics are all about romance. I think they were mostly written by people who lacked in both areas, like people who got picked on or people who'd never get girls.
*cultural differences chop*
It's all the same to me, though. I'd read an American comic if I could find a decent one... and if it was illegally scanned online because I'm poor and it's not like DC or Marvel need any more cash. I just happen to like romance in lieu of spandex wearing, masked crime fighters. Especially if it's illegally scanned. Free stuff is better >smile

I have to say that American comics are amazing in their own accord. I think they are on par with manga and some comics even outshine other series. The difference between comics and manga that I think draw people away are that comics (At least the heavy hitter comics like DC comic characters and Marvel characters) see no end like manga do, which is difficult to comprehend to the average/new reader but it's not always necessarily bad since writers and companies are able to revamp/recreate origin stories that fit more with the times and what not. Another perk is they're able to reuse characters in other series like the Ultimate line in Marvel since the characters are owned by a company instead of just one person.
