The only manga I ever dropped after my favorite character died was Gantz. I heard he's back but, it's too late now.

You stopped reading because a character died in gantz? The one about the game in which if you have enough points you revive someone?
Seriously, if your faourite character dies in gantz you just give it a few months and there's a 50/50 chance they're back. The only one who isnt back yet is kishimoto (I think that was her name), the one right at the beginning.
