Heyo, I'm looking for a manga to read that has a main character that you think is awesome. I find that, more often than not, it is the protagonist that acts as the main draw for me as reader but I don't always like the same things in my protagonists. For instance, both Keima from The World God Only Knows and Luffy from One Piece are two of my favorite characters but have almost nothing in common. Basically, as long as they are written well any type of character can be awesome.

That's why I'm asking you, the esteemed readers of this post, to help me out by telling me about your favorite protagonists and what series they come from.

By the way, I like mostly seinen and shounen but I'm willing to experiment.

You have a good taste for manga, I'm already reading (or have read) all of those manga except for Seishun. However, I'm surprised you find the protagonist of Onani Master awesome, although I do agree that he is a well-written character.

I agree about Onani Master Kurosawa; the protagonist is so admirable in what he does in the end.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Even though it was the right thing, even I was hoping he wouldn't do it. XD

The Legend of Sun Knight / The Legend of Sun Knight (Novel) - very quirky personality, but very strong too.

A Night of a Thousand Dreams - I'm just amazed over and over again at how smart he is.

No Side - great passion!

Hajime no Ippo - incredibly hard-working.

Skip Beat! - her acting scenes are the best~ Ah, or maybe equal with...

Glass Mask - ...this. =w=

Hotel - brings a tear to the eye.

Kanata Kara - I love how she does her best in every situation.

Miman Renai - innocent and cute and works hard for love!

of course he's awesome, if I were him I wouldn't confess my crime to the entire class like that.
but mostly I like him 'cause he was a jerking off jerk and went jumping jack flash.
how about Ichi
20th Century Boys
Franken Fran

Well, for me an "Awesome Protagonist" is on with a strong mind . (that's why i think Keima is awesome)

So:

Aiki
Sun-Ken Rock
Shin Angyo Onshi
Berserk

(Well, almost all of this guys have a strong body too, but that's not the point)

I think BlackStar from Soul Eater is Awesome too, but he is not "the" main character (although for me he steals most of the story)

The main reason why I love Cowboy Bebop so much is because the mc is so f*cking awesomely awesome. User Posted Image
Same thing goes for Gintama (in a different style.) User Posted Image
And Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann though
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
the protagonist here is maybe not the obvious one...

Here are some female protagonists that I found badass as well :
Saya from the anime Blood+.
Balsa from Seirei no Moribito.
Revy from Black Lagoon.

Haha, this thread is turning out to be fruitful, I've already added a lot of these to my wish list based on descriptions alone.

@BlackOrion: I tend to agree with you but I don't know if "strong mind" is how I would put it, however I don't exactly know what you mean by "strong mind" either. What I think you mean by the list you put together are protagonists who have their sh!t together, in which case I would agree. It's just that, a lot of protagonist like that are also jerks, and not the kinds with hearts of gold.

@Blique: I honestly wasn't expecting a lot of the series you recommend but I'll be sure to check them out.

@whatnot: Franken Fran seems like a really interesting manga and I'm surprised I haven't found it by now, thanks.

@Pebble: You... You really have a good taste, I've watched or read all of the manga/anime you mentioned except for Seirei. Have you seen Samurai Champloo?

Quote from Blique
The Legend of Sun Knight / The Legend of Sun Knight (Novel) - very quirky personality, but very strong too.

Totally second this. Sun is awesome. The manga is dragged down by lackluster art and pacing, however, so read the novels instead.

Shingetsutan Tsukihime. Tohno Shiki is Badass. Nanaya Shiki is BADASS.

Übel Blatt. A quite literal "anti-hero" with a twist. Not gonna spoil anything.

Zetsuen no Tempest. Awesome in a completely different sense from the above two. A pair of non-conventional protagonists who get "deep" treatment, so to say. I find both of the main characters very well written, and their motivations and decisions have an unusual amount of realism to them.

To Aru Kagaku no Choudenjibou. This one is more subjective than any of the above as I am heavily biased about Mikoto.

@McCasper:
Thanks! ^^ Ah, I completely forgot to mention somehow...

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - the word epic was made for this series.

Code Geass - the undeniably awesomest protagonist of all of anime history. Not a manga, but still, if you haven't checked it out, you must.

1/2 prince: can't even explain why but all the characters are awesome
rurouni kenshin: i love how he always sticks to his beliefs despite everything
the tarot cafe: she is so calm and put together. she always does her best to help
tokyo crazy paradise: somehow they find the middle between being so very mature and childish. they shoulder responsibily calmly and strongly but still manage to be themselves
