Okay so I've read plenty of manga, and I've come across a couple of josei characters that I love.

Natsu from 7 Seeds
and Bon-chan from Cousin

Both of these female characters start out as that annoying girl with no confidence, really shy, and kind of miserable. But throughout the series they get a lot stronger and resolve to have more confidence and self respect.

I was hoping there would be more manga with a female character like this as the NARRATOR, not just a side character.

Bonus if they're getting over self image/feeling ugly issues like in Bara no Tame ni. Even better if they are inexperienced with guys/are afraid of them, then get over it.

Cat Street fits perfectly. It's one of my favourite mangas for character development. By the end she's nearly unrecognizable from the girl at the beginning.

She suffered from a "past," that's why she's so terribly weak in the beginning.

Juuni Kokki (also called 12 Kingdoms, both the light novel and the anime is really good)
