I had a conversation with my nephew about this not long ago. He was telling me about how much team rocket has changed in the show. I looked up some clips and saw what appeared to be gang wars, arson, and professional hitman style secret meetings...well I'm exaggerating but whatever. So, I told him about the pokemon comics I use to have about 15 years ago where the pokemon kill eachother violently and people die...he hasn't stopped reading them since.

Also, consider other things like Haruhi. If you where to guess from a glance, you might think it's ment for teenage boys right? However, much of the material goes over their head. I don't mean just the anthropic theory and SQL stuff. I'm referring to the style of story and character design itself with the apathetic hero who is suddenly whisked away from his boring life by an eccentric but exciting girl or how he spends most of his time trying to make his mildly insane defacto girlfriend happy so she doesn't destroy the world. This are story aspects generally targeted at and understood by male adults.

Point being that, when it comes to games and manga, you can't say that something is for a group by looks. What decided a demographic isn't that simple.

sorry about the long post.

The anime that was shown on the WB could be seen as childish. But when it comes to the games there's a lot of numbers involved too. I didn't even bother with the cards since it was too much to learn lol.

If you like Pokemon, have at it! You've only got one life to live, so enjoy what you enjoy. It's not hurting anyone smile

So what, who cares if your friends think it's childish. I'm 19 and I still like Pokemon and many other things people would consider childish.

I still watch cartoon's when I wake-up and eat cereal, I occasionally pretend I have superpowers, I absolutely cannot sit still in a swivel chair, I make weird noises and strange faces just because I'm bored, and I'm still scared of things under my bed...

Having an inner child is what makes life fun, don't let people take that away from you.

How is Pokemon childish?
It's a show/game/manga about catching wild critters, then training them to perform a sort of cockfighting for money.
In the fights the critters get burned, cut, punched, kicked, drowned, poisened, electrocuted and other horrible things. And no mattere how much they endure, they can never die, only faint after extended turture. After which they are put in tiny little balls untill the next fight.
Not exactly something suitable for little kids now is it?

pokemon is both childish and mature.
the reason why your friend said it is childish is probably because they aren't mature enough yet.

You know, Pokemon wasn't written by a kid. Children's stories are written by adults who grew up but didn't lose their inner Peter Pan. And wish no-one did. wink

Have fun! Childhood's one of the best periods of your life, and if you can carry a bit of it with you even in your adulthood... you're the lucky one. bigrazz

+1 to this.

One year during university some of us in the dorms played the pokemon games and competed to see who could get a stronger team. Did we feel childish for getting a Nintendo 64 and playing in the dorm common room - don't think so.

And to quote one of my colleagues: "I have to be serious and responsible while working so during my free time I'll be as childish as I like and have as much fun as I can."

well it depends on what your talking about exactly. The anime is very childish and I can no longer even go through a single episode without sighing at the lines the characters say [Though since it's targetted at kids it's to be expected]. The games were ok..Though with it being the same thing every single time, just with different creatures it doesn't have the same appeal as it may have done when it was around the time of red/blue etc. It's pretty much them thinking of ~200 new pokemons, sticking it into the game with a similar story to the others, and then selling them. Maybe also adding a few minigames as something new. I'm wondering how long it's going to be until they run out of things that they can use as a template and have go for everyday items. Like a scouring pad pokemon...dust bin pokemon..ipod pokemon..

But still, this is just my opinion. Everybody is different. I wouldn't judge you for liking pokemon even if your 16+. It's just something you enjoy, like I did not too long back. If your friends think it's childish that's just their view. If you want to stop playing pokemon games just because of what your friends think then that's up to you. I personally would keep playing them even if they did think it was childish. Everyone's entitled to a childish side. It's a good thing to have. smile

Also I do have to say I loved "The Guy" 's comment xD I never really looked at it that way haha

Great words of wisdom there.

nope,it's not
if they ever say it's childish, i have a trump card that would allow even your parent's complain for playing games and anime at my age.

"look, pokemon is one of the most successful game ever, animated, made into books, and even card
known worldwide and loved by people of various ages. I am following it because I am following trend, I want to know why they love pokemon, if you don't play it,watch it, you won't know why. okay, so let me do my research XD"

I do that " if you don't watch or play, you won't know if it's good or not" thing or about learning excuse to get my way with games and anime and other childish thing, they usually let me have my way and stop saying it's childish. btw I am in designer school, future occupation i wish i get (game design or animator) I will deal with anime and game until the day I die and nobody will say it's childish it's my occupation.

analysis:
the anime is a reset...it will be better if they reset the whole thing about ash starting by showing that their 1st meeting with pikachu and starting out...if they do that, then it won't feel that ash turn stupid
now when they just show ash come and lost to beginner after all about league. to us who follow the anime since it 1st come out became irritated by it,so we call it bad.
it was tuned down for younger generation,no longer for our generation (that makes me sound old sad

the anime actually has a few good point,
more pokemon centered, about their life with their trainer, not just the trainer
our tim rocket is much more pro now, not just stupid stalker and they actually do some evil mission.

i haven't watch more to see what's in there, I really need to go back and finish it even if ash's now weak irritate me...part of me just can't accept ash that we have saw growing stronger is now gone and replaced with this 2nd ash.

========
well, actually I simply like them XD, but it is also true, to make one you need to watch and look a lot of those.
i am 20 now...
