EDIT : Recycling this thread.

I'm re-using this thread for a request rather than make a new one...
What I'm looking for is a VN with a good gothic/dark art style. I'd like it to be similar to Phenomeno
As for the story I'm okay with anything as long as there's no excessive fanservice or high sexual content.
Thanks <3

Are you ok with H-content?
If yes my top suggestions would probably be:
http://vndb.org/v211 G-senjou no Maou (Haru's route is the best bittersweet route of the history of VNs for me. And as you asked, it's sad, emotional, but not tragic. bigrazz ). Can't recommend you this one enough.
http://vndb.org/v11 Fate/Stay Night (it's Fate, do I really need to say anything else?)
http://vndb.org/v66 Cross Channel

Also, this is also the list of VNs listed by rating and only for games with at least a partial english patch:
http://vndb.org/v/all?q=;fil=tagspoil-2.lang-en;o=d;s=rating
I pretty much agree with the global rating there, so you can simply pick up anything from the first page, just look at the summaries to see if the story appeals to you (only be aware that some VNs have RPG/SRPG elements ro something else, they're listed in the tags anyway i.e. "Turn Based Strategy Game").

Edit: have been beated by blackd89 to some stuff but well I'm too lazy to edit my post. bigrazz

There's a few charts like....this one.

Me being me I like Aoi Shiro. But you might want something like Kana or Clannad. But 999 will always be my favorite, even if it isn't a whole lot of tragic.

Seconding Aoshiro. It has butt loads of content (almost 60 freaking endings!)
Osananajimi wa Daitouryou ~My girlfriend is the President.~ is great too
Kira Kira, for sure
Katahane too
And all of the Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o series

Excellent choice! Forgot to say that that game also has the greatest BGM! wink

Visual Novels of sorts which have actually no H content:
Snatcher (SegaCD game, can be easily emulated on PC) - heavily based on Blade Runner
Policenauts (PSX game, can be easly run on PC) - I'm not going to name the movies on which this was based, because those can spoil you the story

Both of those were made by the famous Hideo Kojima (though he wasn't known worldwide back when he made those games). Both are available in English (though Policenauts via English patch). Neither of them is a galge (though both have a hint of that).
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Unless you count the many different game over screens, those games have a single ending. There are no routs to choose.

NGE: Girlfriend of Steel (PC game) - available in English, you make very little decisions in the game, most of the time the game plays by itself. The ending depends solely on the last choice you make in the game. One of the endings contains brief nudity (no real H content or anything like that) .

Thanks, it'll take me a while to check all of these out lol.

Another thing : I would prefer VNs that don't use a lot of supernatural stuff. I've run into some that randomly incorporate time travel or ghosts etc and it kind of ruins the story. Unless the plot revolves around supernatural like Steins;Gate I would like it to be a bit more realistic.

recently I'm really getting into games by Liar-soft
you may want to check out Forest or Sekien no Inganock
both have unusual narrative and art style

Imo Ever17 was horrible... the girls weren't very interesting.
On the other hand I completed G-senjou no Maou and absolutely loved it... so atm it's the second best after Clannad.

@caozhi; I think i'll try 999...mostly because it's a thriller.

IMHO Ever 17 is quite overrated, probably because it has been around in English since I can't remember. So it became a sort of classic for the English reading audience. But it's not bad per se.
I didn't have doubts you'd have enjoyed G-senjou no Maou since Haru is the epitome of awesomeness. wink

Since it's never been mentioned so far, Chaos;Head ( http://vndb.org/v382 ) is set in the same universe of Steins;Gate. It's quite inferior to Steins;Gate imho, there is too much craziness and supernatural going on, but still, if you want something messed up that can send you chills while playing I don't think there are many VNs better than this. But I advise you that you need a "hard stomach" to digest some scenes.

I really liked Ever17, but if you don't like the characters I suppose it won't do much for you. Well, here are my suggestions,

Try Remember11, it's from the same developer as Ever17 but it's quite a bit different. It is also a survival mystery but you don't choose different girl's paths, instead you play two routes, first from the heroine's perspective then the second from the guys perspective. The story involves the two main characters repeatedly switching bodies while trying to survive and figure out just what the hell is going on. Even though you didn't like Ever17 you should still check it out.

Next, Since you loved G-Senjou no Maou (Indeed it is totally kick ass) you must play Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo which is also by akabeisoft2 and is equally great.

As a Type Moon fan I have to recommend Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night, the anime versions of both, which you may have seen, just didn't do the original visual novels justice. Tsukihime is a bit old and doesn't have voice acting, also the art is pretty lacking but it is still great nonetheless.

Another must play is Muv Luv Alternative, it's number 1 on vndb for a reason. You absolutely must play Muv Luv Extra and Unlimited first in order get the full experience though. A lot of people seem to find Extra in particular, and Unlimited mediocre but I rather liked them. Extra is just a lighthearted romcom but still fun.

Yume Miru Kusuri is quite good as well. The character art takes some getting used to but it's not really a problem. Also if you choose to do Aeka's route first you will most likely find it very difficult to play either of the remaining two routes as it will now be clear what fate awaits Aeka should you choose to ignore her.

Kara no Shoujo is an excellent detective murder mystery that can be very gory and disturbing, so faint of heart be warned. There is no good ending for this either so be prepared to be depressed.

I liked Chaos;Head and its delusion Triggers. I had way to much fun torturing the protagonist with the red delusions Hahahaha! ... However, how much you enjoy the game probably comes down to whether or not you hate the main character. And as someone already mentioned Chaos;Head can be pretty disturbing too. There is also Steins;Gate in the same series which has been mentioned as well.

Sekien no Inganock has unique and beautiful art and a great atmosphere but it can be repetitive and has an open ending. So don't expect satisfying explanations.

Finally, Kira Kira and Edelweiss from Overdrive are pretty good. Definitely play the re-translated version of Edelweiss though since the original translation is terrible.
