Oh, the internet is just so interesting when there's work to do! :/

Well....I like shounen set in another world a bit better because you can do more with it. I mean, there's only so much of the "normal people don't notice us" sort of thing one can handle. Plus you have to pay attention to the rules of our world (physics, morals, etc >.> ) But in another world....rules? What rules? smile You can have giant titans wandering the earth, awesome supernatural battles between strange creatures, awesome technology that couldn't exist here, etc.

In short, in another world= awesome fun. ^_^

I like both, but I prefer the story that sets in our world, even though you can add something supernatural. I read many stories that takes place in our world but change some things.

same reason cool

just adding, by making another world as setting, there's no limit on what the mangaka can explore, the limit is his/her creativity (and some logic)

also, TokyoIsTheCenterOfTheUniverse is old

warning: only open the link when you have nothing to do in the rest of the day

Hard to say, honestly it just depends how the action and story is done ultimately, for example, Kuroko no basket, excellent manga/anime set in our world, if it had been set up in a fantasy type of relm it would not have been as good since it is essentially about everyday life basketball. Same with Psyren, Bleach, My Hero Acadamia (our world but set in the future), Death Note (especially Death Note), Assassination Classroom, Yu Yu Hakusho, Blue exorcist, etc. All would not have been as good had they been set in another fantasy type world. However manga/anime like Naruto, One Piece, Soul eater, Fairy tale, Attack on Titan, FMA, Hunter x Hunter, Re:zero, One Punch Man, D Grey Man, etc. They would have all been very different set in our world, and definitely not as good. Plus, the world building aspect gives the story a more interesting twist. Ultimately, for me it doesn't matter where the story is set in, our world or another world, what matters is the quality of the story and how it plays out. Yes, stories set in another world may have initial appeal but if it is not done right then it means nothing. However, a story based on something as trivial as basketball (to me) can become something fascinating and interesting when done right.

It depends on the content and concept of the shounen, so I like both. Taking My Hero Academia and Black Clover as examples, I think MHA is an excellent example of how shounen is set in our world (modernized) and Black Clover in an entirely different fantasy-type world. You can argue both sides honestly, you can set shounen in our world like MHA because it's something you know so well about - the rules, political conflicts, how school life is set out, etc. You can alter this to your liking and somehow add a supernatural twist to it, whether the world knows about powers or they are a hidden society. My Hero Academia does a great job at this by saying there are mutations that developed in humans which were later developed and named as 'quirks', now globally everybody has something supernatural but it's still somehow modern and set in our world. Black Clover however is set out in a typical fantasy world, where apparently schools don't exist, but the world building is clear and everyone has vastly different types of magic. In this scenario, you can make up what magic you want them to have (elemental, flower, light, curse, poison magic, etc.) you can play so much with the physics and rules;
e.g. in MHA 80% of global population have quirks, and generally the type of quirk you get is dependant on your genetics and mix of your parent's quirks. In Black Clover, you can have a completely different magic type to the rest of your family members but genetic inheritance also plays a big factor (this is shown with nobles- you could have the same magic or with different/similar properties).

All in all, both options are good, I guess I maybe prefer shounen set in another world since it would be different to what I already know about our world and that's already something to be intrigued about. I guess in different worlds you can also explore different species and morals, if only the world building is done properly ofc.

It really depends on plot.

The strength of traditional young adult comics isn´t believability or realism so:
I like both, but I prefer shounen set in a made up world a little more.

A solid idea for a poll.

I like both, but shounen set in a made up world a little more.
As long as it is more or less coherent with itself fro example I like the absurdity of bobobo and the more rigid system of Ueki no Hōsoku are great examples of shounen set in another world and GTO / biscuit hammer some set in our world and they all stay coherent to their logic or lack of it .

I dislike
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
those in which the hero's suffering is just an excuse to introduce his next power-up whilst the main cast is constantly praised for mediocre work that any other character outside the main cast could have thought, without the plot advancing from the initial premise
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I might be a bit sour with MHA
