How long is the Washizu arc? I've heard some offhand comments that it's still ongoing but that just seems insane.

Yeah. It's still going on (now 18 volumes long lol). Apparently, it just keeps going back and forth between the two.
I think the Washizu Arc is the last arc of the series which is why it's so long compared to the other arcs.

Props for the author for dragging out one of the longest mahjong battle of all time! Lol

Actually, Fukumoto has explicitly stated (during 2010's Desucon, an anime con in Finland) that the end of the Washizu arc will NOT be the end of the series.

Oh wow really? That's cool, but damn, I can't imagine how long the last arc will be then lol.
Oh well, more Akagi = good (as long as it's entertaining).

Any updates on how long this arc is. What chapter does it finally end?

It seams to come to an end, but is anything certain right now?
Btw I'm glad to hear, that it won't be the end of the Akagi. I think next big enemy might be Soga from Ten (tenna toori kaidanji)? Manga, which might be interesting

I was going to read the manga to pick up where the anime ended but after I heard that the Washizu Arc is still going on, I'm not even going to touch it. I mean, a game spanning over 18 volumes, it's just completely ridiculous. I thought Bleach was bad about dragging out stuff, but Akagi makes Bleach look like the kiddie league when it comes to dragging something out.
The Japanese are really bad about dragging out popular fiction in order to get ever cent they can out of it. They even broke Steve Jobs autobiography down into volumes in order to make an extra buck.
