Try Oretama, you won't but you could since you actually posted here to say something that was told not to such as Hentai.

I dislike yuri, no matter how much I tried I just couldn't bring myself to like them.
I tried Girl Friends, but I find it boring and dropped it at volume 4+...
I also dislike shota and loli, ugh, that shit is just wrong.

Have you seen Fruits Basket? Seriously, I remember it's tagged as a "harem" here but once you read it, you'd just see a bunch of male characters introduced to the main girl but only one guy actually falls for her.

One word, Rabbit.

Also how long until the initial triangle was solved? not to mention story wise it was solved several chapters before the character actually tells the reader when it was solved from his side.

I would give you this, Fruits Basket is more of a triangle that a Harem but its not wrong to call it a Harem either because at one point there were three characters that were a possible choice for her, also its her that make a choice BTW.

The fact that everyone is posting "I haet hentai/smut/ecchi/yaoi/yuri/loli/shota 4eva!!1!" kind of saddens me. The entire point was to post something you might actually give a chance to, given a good one comes along. Not something you won't listen to anyone on, period. It's a shame that people won't be more open minded about certain things, but I suppose stuff like Kodomo no Jikan would be pushing people's limits, despite being excellent. Well, if the reviews have anything to say about it.

I know no one cares much about whether or not I myself actually like or dislike certain manga. But when I tell you, I'll at least give reasons as to why.

Yaoi: I have tried a few. Gravitation for instance, was too unrealistic. It felt like the romance went way too quickly with seemingly no chemistry between them anyway, and it also had a serious pet peeve of mine in media: it felt like just about everyone important was gay. How does that even happen, seriously...? At least, it doesn't happen that easily in real life without some serious work to make your circle of acquaintances comprised of all gay people.
That aside, oftentimes it has an incredibly 'pretty' art style where all the men are overly beautiful. I will admit, it may or may not be real life events that turned me off from this genre more than anything else, but that doesn't mean that my points are invalid- those things do bother me rather a lot. Shounen ai bothers me for the same reasons.

Ecchi: I'm not opposed to the genre at all. Quite the opposite in fact; I'm currently reading Minamoto-kun Monogatari and enjoying it... when it comes out. >_<
It's the fact that the whole thing generally devolves into T&A and stupid sexual and occasional bathroom jokes. It's usually has a Harem tag alongside it, which complicates the matters more as it... it kinda feels like the multiple girls are only there so the reader can pick one they like and read just to see them in various states of undress. I don't know why the whole idea of ecchi seems to ruin a good manga plot, maybe because it devolves into fanservice for the sake of it. I don't hate the very idea, but it does seem like ecchi in general kinda sucks.

Mecha: I'm an engineer's daughter. For the most part, I spend the entire time going, "THESE MACHINES ARE INEFFICIENT, WHY ARE THEY LIKE THIS, THIS SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING." I might start reading Bokurano soon, since it's by a favorite artist of mine, but depending on how heavily it focuses on the mecha, I might have to stop reading... I don't really want to though.

That's about it, I think...

I really hate that stuff about yaoi/shounen-ai too, though I've read shounen-ai works by est em and found that not only do the men always look like men (even when wearing female clothing, though this doesn't happen often), but also that I generally really like the main characters and enjoy the interaction between them. Even though I've never read anything by her that features the same main character(s) for even a single volume worth, I feel like I get a good grasp of the characters, though sometimes I have to read the story a few times to really understand it all (due to subtlety, not poor storytelling). There was one series by her that had the randomly many important gays together (Happy End Apartment), but I found that it didn't bother me as much as it usually does, perhaps because it was so lighthearted. I could probably go on about how I love her works, and not only as pieces of bl but as great manga in general, but if you look her up there are all kinds of reviews that could say it better than I ever could.

Basically I'm saying I think most shounen-ai is (putting it very lightly) not something many people would enjoy, but I think there are a few authors worth giving a try. So far I know of one. smile

For the ones sex related in any way i have nothing, but try reading Cannon god Exaxxion for the mecha thing.
Most things are well tough and, even tough extremely futurist and sci fi like, have an explanation.

Whenever I see any of the following genres on a manga I automatically backspace. xD

Martial Arts: From what I've seen, the main character always just /has/ to get stronger for whatever reason, is an idiot/ very naive, is bad with women, and has to get his butt kicked before he can do anything useful. Female characters are annoying/ tsundere/ accident-prone/ pushy/ thrown into the story just for fanservice. The antagonists have no redeemable qualities so you're forced to root for the MC, whose personality is generic enough for you to be able to at least relate to him.

Harem: Or reverse harem, for that matter. I don't like these because it's usually very obvious in the first volume who the protagonist is going to end up with and the series still drags on. And as the series drags on, I end up disliking the protagonist because a.) they are boring lack a sense of humor, b.) they don't know how to properly turn someone down, c.) they are too dense to know if someone likes them, and d.) they only confess to the person they truly love when it's totally heartbreaking for everyone else (that is, after leading everyone on). I'm not a fan of series with multiple romances 'cause one couple tends to have enough drama.

Shounen Ai: I've really tried to find one I liked. ;_; But I always end up thinking it would be better if the girly boy was, well, a girl. Especially if he already looks and acts like one. I know some of them have good plots and aren't out to market horny teenage boys but... well, if I'm reading a story just for its plot, I don't care much for romance in the first place.

Hope some of y'all have good recommendations. biggrin Please, no hentai/ lolicon/ shotacon, I left them out 'cause there's no changing my mind on those. <.<;

For Martial arts you could try Holy land (he is kind of an special case of what you describe, definitely, kind of a pussy at times but with a wild side when fighting), Aiki(he is anything but an idiot), Shamo.

Most Seinen Martial arts manga have a more interesting plot than the one you describe (Aiki might not be that far from what you said for the girls, but the MC makes the manga way different than most)

Seconded.
Also aside Holy Land and Aiki, try Gekiryuuchi.

Definitely the same for me. I hate harems for all the same reasons as you and for some reason sometimes the most logical choice for the character to pick he doesn't pick. If I read a romance manga and then it turns into a harem I tend to just drop it on the spot. Unless a harem has some sort of plot I feel like its pretty much a waste of time to read.

Would anyone like to try changing my mind on these genres?

Mecha: Biology beats this random far-fetched pathetic not-even-sci-fi genre hands down.
Shounen-ai and yaoi: Can't see the allure of two boys sticking together, though I do enjoy two pretty girls together, though not as much as 1 boy and 1 girl.

Thanks for any recommendations!

incest .. enough said
it just disgusts me ... no

it's not just morally wrong, but biologically wrong too

You know, biologically it's both wrong and right. Obviously reproducing with your close kin means that genetic variation is at its absolute minimum which can contribute over a prolonged, and more short term, period of time to the accumulation of recessive alleles and chromosomal abnormalities. However, there have been well documented cases of women who have tracked down their long lost sons (that they gave up for adoption etc.) and being attracted to, and falling in love with, them. This is thought to be because we are attracted to faces and appearances which are similar to our own (and, exponentially, our parents) and the people we see around us at a young age. We have a "search image" that we compare against to judge people as attractive or not. This is why, when the normal bonds of father/daughter, mother/son, brother/sister have not formed and the two people in question are reunited, one or both parties may be attracted to, and fall in love with, the other. Biologically speaking this makes sense as you would want to be attracted to people similar to your father (if you're female) or mother (if you're male) because they (your father/mother) survived long enough to reproduce, hence their genes must be good (survival of the fittest and all that).
^^''' ...so yeah. Biologically there's a counter point which explains why kin may be attracted to each other (although incest occurring where the brother/sister, mother/son, father/daughter have been together since birth (ie. have bonded as a brother and sister, father and daughter, mother and son) is not supported at all by this argument, but on a wider basis, this helps to explain why some incest does occur).

Personally I don't like reading about incest either though.

For you I'd recommend Stray little devil which is more upbeat and fantasy since you didn't like the slow pacing of Girl friends - this energy is directed toward the whimsical plot, however, and not the romance. I definitely urge you to try Prism (Higashiyama shou) since it gets right to the point and is absolutely one of my favorites (recent developments aside). It doesn't circle around the yuri issue. And since you don't enjoy loli or shota there's Hoshikawa ginza district 4 which is loli yuri but not hentai.
