... wont all the girls end up coming around to liking the protagonist in the end? It wouldn't really be a story otherwise; unless perhaps the male lead shifted his focus to someone else or something.

I don't know why a mangaka would do something like that to the protagonist -- unless a similar situation happened to them and he/she was venting.
