Ai Hime - Ai to Himegoto Calm, peaceful, lovely romance. Not a lot of angst, but beautifully done. I love the art style too, and it suits the style of the manga. I love Sora Log from the same author too, which has a little more angst to it.

Sarashi Asobi Again, really lovely art that complements the story. The story itself is based around a reaper and the girl whose soul he's supposed to collect, and it's probably my favourite supernatural shoujo ever. A bit dark, but the two main characters fit together so naturally.

Orange Marmalade My other favourite supernatural shoujo (if it is a shoujo, not sure). Sloooooow romance, but I find it pretty realistic for what the main characters are going through. My favourite part (and what puts some people off) is how the manhwa shows what might happen to vampires after trying to blend in with humans for a few hundred years. No fangs, hissing, flying, or sparkling.

Beast Master and seconding Dengeki Daisy The relationship between the two main characters flows very nicely in both of these. The author doesn't try putting in a bunch of fake misunderstandings and love triangles to jazz it up - she just lets thecharacters work out the kinks comfortably. She's also good at building additional characters and outside situations that keep everything interesting - and best of all, she has a brilliant sense of humor.

Hiyokoi Cute, cute, cute. And usually that would get a little sickly after a while, but somehow this manga stands out in the cute-manga-crowd as something interesting, though I'm not even sure why. Something about the uber shy Hiyokoi just gets to me.

edit: I have to add Lovely Everywhere. It's kind of like Hiyokoi's storyline, with Dengeki Daisy's sense of humor. Really brilliant - and original. The author talks about how she has trouble fitting into the shoujo style, and I think that helps make this one stand out. So many brilliant moments.

Watashi no Ookami-san and its sequel Dear Very, very adorable with a gaggle of memorable and lovable characters. Might sound cheesy and cliche, but Fujiwara Cocoa somehow always manages to make such premises heartwarming and a joy to read. Definitely my absolute favorite romance.

Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha. The premise--in which the protagonist gains the power to change into whomever she desires--might seem overdone, but the execution is brilliant. Rather than furthering misunderstandings in headache-inducing ways, the protagonist actually works to reverse such misunderstandings, and gain the love of her crush through her own merits. Very lovable and down-to-earth characters.

Blood Alone A sweet, slow romance between a vampire and a human. Very slice-of-life, with some very nice world-building and likable characters.

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun A 4-koma romantic comedy. Funny in the way that only Tsubaki Izumi can be. Currently, focused more on the comedy aspect than the romantic aspect, but still a great, enjoyable, and easy read.

Akatsuki no Yona A very nice fantasy romance (and somewhat a coming-of-age story). Storyline isn't particularly unique, but this manga succeeds where others fail with likable characters and believable character development. If I had to label this, it would be "very shoujo, but very good shoujo."

Vampire Juujikai I actually don't see this as much of a romance, but it is definitely one of my favorite mangas ever (not least of which because Shirodaira Kyou wrote it). What starts out as an average storyline turns into something entirely unique with several plot twists that I never see coming.

I recommend Akuma to Dolce: It's utterly charming and balances just right between bitter an sweet. Very episodic, but incredibly emotionally complex.

Again, it's hard to decide, which romance Mangas are my favourite ones and why, but I want to give it a try. So, there are currently these coming to my mind ...

* Dengeki Daisy - I think, that the drawing style and the whole atmosphere of this Manga are great. There are moments of distance, guilt, tension fear, but also of closeness, longing, friendship and love (and fun) so well mixed up, that the balance is always kept. Aside from this, the storyline is quite interesting and even the opponents of the main characters are likeable.

* Oresama Teacher - There may not be that much romantic moments so far, but I like how the relationship between the characters builts up slowly and so many different kinds of closeness are involved. Step by step, one can see how the characters realize their feelings - and maybe react to that in a hilarious (unpredictable) way.

* Suki-tte Ii na yo - The storyline so far not only focused on the main couple, but also allows the reader to see the people (and the full spectrum of feelings) around them, just like how they react to them.

* Coelacanth and Heaven's Door (HONGOU Ranko) - Sometimes I don't know if I like or dislike the romances in them, because they are rather painful - and therefore realistic. But, in the end, that may exactly be the reason why I still think about them among my favourites...

* Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun - It's still ongoing, but till now there have been already so many feelings (and rather unique characters) been involved, that I decided to list it up here. It's actually one of the few stories, which in my eyes are able to draw a understandable line between the two kinds of "like" - and what it means to slowly grow closer to someone else.

* Anya Kouro - Short, but beautiful and definitely worth it's time.

* Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji - Well, at first glance it may look like the male main character is a pure sadist and cold person, but in the end - I think - he is for his age rather mature and realistic about feelings in general - and love, which involves two people and their opinions, which sometimes just aren't the same and need to be adjusted in order to be together.

* Koukou Debut - What to say? It's cute, light and gives of a warm feeling.

* Strobe Edge - It took me some time to start reading this one, because usually I'm not so into dramatic and painful stories, but I'm glad I gave it a try. It brought me back to the (stereotyped?) Shoujo genre and it's one of the Mangas, which has been able to show many different kinds of feelings, e.g. the beginning and end of love, all the small details around them, which suddenly start to matter - without being exaggeratedly depressing. ^^

Hibi Chouchou - This is a cute manga as in really cute >.< Its not like the typical shoujo with annoying female lead and super hot guy. I mean even the antagonist is also lovable... Your heart will flutter when you read this. Believe me. I'm not into cute mangas coz' I've experienced reading mangas like that last time and it disappoint me big time, but this manga is different.

LAST GAME This is a story of a smart poor independent female lead and a smart over-confident guy. Another manga I love so much... The guy like the female lead but she's too dense to notice it since she always give he time studying as she only has her mother supporting her. At first the male lead is annoyed with he coz' she always beat him in terms of grades and sports, but his feelings changes as they grow. This is another cute story and its a must read!!

Stroke Material Its a smut manga but its not that smutty. I promise. It's an adorable story about a womanizer and a serious student council president. He was puzzled by the fact why the female lead is not drawn by his charms. It's a really lovable manga. The female lead is not your typical shoujo female lead. She's stoic but actually.... Not gonna continue it XD

Nagatachou Strawberry Story about a rich girl who just want live a normal life. She decided to went a school far away from he old school thinking everything will be different, but the male lead found out about the real her. This will be the story of the female lead and the male lead's relationship after the male lead found out the truth...

Saruyama! This is a hilarious manga full of romance between a beautiful mature girl and a hyper boy who looks like a monkey because of his monkey like ears. The female lead came from a good status family but they had family crisis making the female lead to transfer to a wild school. Story about how the male lead and female lead overcome their relationship when someone is tying to destroy and also how they become more mature.

All the mangas I suggested mostly don't have the typical main characters from a shoujo manga. Meaning, they don't have a super hot guy who thinks he's the best and always bullies the female lead, and they don't have annoying girls who cries with little things.. biggrin

Mars - It's deep and serious, no doubt about that. And also a little bit (more) on the dark side. So don't expect a comedy full of laughter. Yet, it is one of the best shoujos I have read. The characters are real, they don't live in a world without worries. There's angst, and darkness, both in the characters and in the action, and love story that is somewhat unprobable, yet real at the same time. They have to not only overcome "intruders" from outside, but also their own selves. Definitely a great read.

Kare Kano - Again, it has it's share of darkness, but it's not even close to Mars. It's of different kinds. The characters are once again afraid of themselves, but they they deal with it is beautifullyt and carefully done. I also liked the fact that the manga doesn't focus completely on the main couple, it has several other "side" couples as well, and every each and one of them gets to be in the spotlight. A great read indeed, can't believe it has only been mentioned once until now.

Bokura ga Ita - This is labeled as tragedy, and is indeed very sad. That being said, don't miss reading it. The characters are believable, none of them is perfect, and they are portrayed from their days of high school 'till they are grown-ups, with their own jobs. You can see actually just much they have matured and how much their love of each other has changed them. It's one of those couples you just can't help but root for in the end, maybe not whole-heartedly (my case), but still, you'll end up smilling in the end.

Boku no Hatsukoi wo Kimi ni Sasagu - Now, this is a little bit confuding, especially the ending. I won't say more, as to not ruin it for you (in case you haven't already read it). I'll just recommend it. It may not be the best of it's genres, but it's definitely way better than the majority. There's also a little time skip, which I absolutely loved. You see them change from the kids they once were, by their problems, their love, their ters and their smiles, their sadness and their laughter. A good read, which I fully recommend.

I can only remember three of the best romances that I've read so I might add more later.

Beauty Pop has Kiri, the main heroine, who isn't interested in love or much of anything and a main love interest who doesn't like the heroine at all and constantly thinks that he's better than her. What's interesting about this manga is that Kiri is amazing at cutting hair and transforming girls, but she doesn't show it off and her skill/goodness is what makes her so likeable for readers and the main love interest (who eventually falls for her). This is a manga with a lot of heart and a lot of comedy.

Crossroad has Kajitsu, a misunderstood heroine, who reunites with her step siblings, but is treated coldly by the step brother she was close to. However this manga is anything but dramatic. The romances are hot (the guy she dates first is a slightly sadistic teacher) and there's plenty of comedy.

Tenshi ja Nai!! is one of my favorites because of the heroine. When Hikaru was younger she was a model, but after a horrible bullying incident she never wanted to be in the spot light again. Rather than living the quiet invisible life that she wanted, she ends up rooming with a cross-dressing male model who blackmails her to keep his secret. The manga is about the romance that develops between the two as Hikaru protects his secret and how she becomes a stronger person.

Best ever is hard to say! I love romance manga, anything that can bring a smile to my face! However, if I had to pick the best...

Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden would be my choice! Prequel to Fushigi Yuugi as you possibly know, it's about a girl who gets sucked into a book where she has to become a priestess to save the land from evil by finding the seven celestial warriors. It's got beautiful art work, an interesting storyline, and memorable characters! The romance between the main characters is breathtaking! I mean, the scene between them really leave me breathless! A kiss, a confession of love, being separated
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
and reunited again
, I feel out of the tons of manga I've read it's the one that speaks to me the most.

If you're looking for a great romance, I'd say this one is it. eyes
