I want a good tragedy. Meaning one in which the reason for the tragedy isn't stupid/forced and isn't just like random 'character dies just to make it sad!', but there are relationships built up so even if it is a random death it's still good! Is this making any sense? I just feel that some manga/books will add something to make the work sad but will fail on really making a compelling tragedy.

Now I enjoy a good tragedy every once in a while (To much tragedy can be hard to handle!) and these manga I've read have some good tragedy in them,

A Fairytale for the Demon Lord

Nabari no Ou

Orange (TAKANO Ichigo)- Well I haven't read THAT much off it, but it seems to be headed in the right direction...

Utahime

Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan

Help? If I haven't explained myself well enough, just ask for better clarification.

Usually I'm not really into tragedies while reading, but for me those within the storylines of Heaven's Door (HONGOU Ranko), Mugen no Juunin and Basilisk have been quite well handled.

Edit: The last two are actually tagged as mature, so I guess you can "ignore" them ... ^^"

Hotaru no Mori - I think it's a one shot somewhere, but it's a sort of bittersweet tragic romance. Also the first short story of the Korean Nabi - where the girl is kidnapped by her father's enemies but makes friends with one of her captors, who wishes to be reincarnated as a tree... you'll understand when you read it lol.

Mademoiselle Butterfly is amazing, I've reread it quite a few times ^^Short though, only 2 volumes, but really worth it.

Cross Game was already mentioned, but you might want to check out Adachi Mitsuru's other works like H2 and Touch. He really likes to use death as a plot device for further development (in the case of Cross Game - and arguably Touch - he uses it to start the actual plot). He has a knack for not really blowing it out of proportion like others tend to, yet it's clear that the death plays a huge role in how the story develops.

Quote from caozhi

Seconded. Also recommend Variante, done by the same artist.

Otherwise...
Alive - The Final Evolution
20th Century Boys
Clover (Clamp)
Hotarubi no Mori E
Pluto
Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna
Usotsuki Mi-kun to Kowareta Ma-chan Totteoki no Uso
Vampire Juujikai

...OK, I do not understand why Monster is marked mature, and 20th Century Boys/Pluto isn't. What.

And, I never realized how difficult it was to find a good tragedy that isn't mature (i.e. Bokurano, Gunslinger Girl, etc)... Well.
