Ok, quick, think! Shoujo romance, who's the romantic interest of the girl? First thought is automatically a gorgeous guy who's aloof (or more of a jerk) who typically steals the girls heart away just from her first glance at him! And so on, I'm sure anyone who's read even a few shoujo manga knows what I'm talking about.
What I'm looking for is an untypical male romance interest. Some strange, different, not 'handsome' and just all around... different! I'd also prefer if the romance isn't the normal, but that would just be an extra plus. I don't specifically want shoujo. Seinen, shounen, josei or shoujo is fine as long as the male is untypical.

i dont know if you've already read any of these or not, so i'm just gunna post them anyway..
Orange (TAKANO Ichigo) Not many chapters out yet, but I think its guna turn out pretty good!
Nousatsu Junkie Their just one of my favourite couples. =)
You probably know of Koi dano Ai dano and its Prequel Warau Kanoko-sama
I think Taiyou no Ie is super cute!
I love the story to Siesta and Platina
Lastly I just want to mention The Infernal Devices I know there isnt any chapters out yet, but I heard they'll start releasing them soon, and I'm in love with the novels, so I cant wait for the manga to start!! =)

Across a Golden Prairie - male lead is an old man
Wandering Son - male lead is a very girly boy
Angel Sanctuary - closer to a typical hot blooded shonen male lead in a a shojo manga
Love Roma - male lead is honest about everything and says whatever is on his mind
Suna no Shiro - male lead is bit of a Gary-stu, but he's not that bad

From Far Away - I love this male lead! He acts a little cold, but he's actually very kind towards and protective of the female lead. He really, really cares about her.
1/2 Prince / 1/2 Prince (Novel) - rather than the usual dominating male lead, this one is fond of supporting the female lead and letting her shine. If anyone hurts her, he'll wreak havoc upon their lives.
Midori no Hibi - great personality - tough yet kind.

Dragon's Son Changsik - in this series the female lead has a really unique love interest
Spoiler (mouse over to view) The male lead is an 80 year old man with whom the female lead (an elf chick) had an affair 60 years ago (and he dumped her in a horrible way). She is technically older than him. The guy gets occasionally younger though (as in he doesn't look like an old gramps all the time.)
I'd also say Kanojo wa Sore o Gaman Dekinai, but as intriguing as it is it fits a number of your NOs (mainly mature and some people would say shotacon). It's about a kid who was bullied because he was fat, so he started wearing a full body dog costume. A completely abnormal teacher-in-training falls in love with him on the first... sniff(?)
Spoiler (mouse over to view) In the end he actually starts going out with her. In your average manga series he would end up with the classmate who he had a crush on, but this one is far from average.
While Lorska is really good at recommending romance series, you'd rather stay away from Natsu no Zenjitsu if you don't want any adult/mature content (if my memory serves right, this one has plenty).
Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku o! (anime) - nothing mind blowing here and it even has some ecchi in it (but not really that much), The female lead finds the male lead to be really cute doe to his small height.

I'd still read them though...

There are quite a few manga out there with good and interesting and abnormal male leads. But just to be different I tried to find a few that were really out there... like, more bizarre than usual. Hopefully this is helpful.
