Okay so basically I was quite bothered by the appearance of the fiancee of what's her name... I'll call him Mr. Douchebag. So basically, does Mr. Douchebag lose or win? I'm positive he loses but I just have to make sure. It really felt like the author just needlessly added a pointless conflict JUST to be able to have a conflict at all! Her still being in a coma was enough conflict to keep the story interesting but his appearance just really put me off. I'd like some details on him too. How long is he in the story for?

He's there for only 2 volumes.

If you ask me It's not exactly just for conflict. It's to add a mayor pressure on Kirito, a time limit and a driving force to go out looking for her with any lead as small as it could be, otherwise he could have just stayed stoic waiting for her.
As for your question, justice gets served in vol4 (not enough if you ask me).

Woohoo awesome!

Also, I'd have to say that El Douchebaggio was unneeded. If you look at the amount of love between the two expressed at the end of volume 1 you can see that even without that extra conflict he would still have tried his hardest to get to her.

Don't you think that with less conflict it just gets more boring to read. Honestly I cannot stand it when things are perfect from the beginning.

You really need to read vol 3 and 4 to know his use... in the plot, this douchebag's not going to keep ya down for long biggrin

The douchebag was needed as both a driving force and a main villain. There needed to be a reason why Asuna was trapped while everyone else escaped. A fiance suits it perfectly especially one who is simply after the company, power and money of Asuna's family. He doesn't want her or any objections she might raise getting in his way so he keeps her mind imprisoned until they are married. He then tells Kirito to destory his morale and get him to disappear so he would not ruin his plan (obviously this fails) The douchebag also makes the succeeding volumes possible.

After Healthcliff and all he did the next villain had to do something equally scumbagish and evil or near enough to it that he was simply not a joke in comparison. There needed to be a reason for the main villain to be where he was so Kirito would have the emotional stake to fight him.

He doesn't even appear THAT much that you'd want him to be out of the story in the first place...

are you asking for spoilers? because that's what i feel. he's not worth mentioning and really not mentioned again after volume 4 (although asuna used it to argue with her parents that they're not good at deciding her future somewhere in volume 7 or something). so yeah, me douchebag loses, in game and real life. you won't see him again.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
basically, there is no prize at the top of the tree. it's a marketing dud. the last bos room is made to be unopenable but kirito somehow has the staff/ adminisrtator card to open it. the top of the tree is a brainwashing laboratory for mr douchebag to do human experiment on the unconsious SAO players. he was defeated by kirito when heathcliff/ kayaba/ former vialin ghost /memories /segregate data actually handed kirito the authority to the virtual reality world that is higher than the one mr douchebag has. kirito than defeated / apprehend mr douchebag outside the hospital on the way to seeing asuna

Why not keep reading? Haha, though I believe the SAO arc was the best. Could have left it at that, I think.

Vol 8 is like vol 2 full of side stories. Vol 9 & 10 are a new arc involving Asuna and kirito's life both inside and outside VR.

You better wait till vol 11 to continue reading... vol 10 doesnt end quite well the feeling i got once it was over is... "WHAT?, this will end in vol 15" and looking at what the writer spoiled of vol 11 its likely to happend lol .
