Hello there! Gotta question about the story. A few years ago I read some of it and found the story to not be progressing at all and dropped it but after another 100 chapters released... Does the story move on? Does he ever somehow get back to mainland Japan for a while or anything? Thanks

I think your mistaken in thinking him getting back is the point. Other than that, there's been development but only recently to anything that would be considered truly pivotal like what happened to the men or ikuto's family. That's mostly this chapter and the next though. I don't know what kind of progress your expecting cause, like I said, him getting off the island probably isn't the point of the story.

Well, there are other things to look forward to. The main character and his relationship with others does grow alot over those 100 chapters but don't expect romance. Atleast don't expect atypical romance. Think of it more as bonds of friendship I guess...What I'm trying to say is "A lot has happened and there has been a lot of progress but I have no clue what 'progress' your looking for specifically." It happens all to often when people complain about a story not progressing and they are obsessing over a detail or genre that wasn't even there in the first place.

Usually by a story progressing it means that it's getting closer to the end.... Like if in the story the main character tried building new rafts to cross the ocean and the story only progresses (gets closer to the end) by means of the main character every so often while he's screwing around on the island comes up with an improvement to his ship design. Eventually leading to the main character making a ship with a compass and a map he's made of his explorations and fancy gadgets that leads to him somehow or other getting back home. But from what I remember of the story is just him sitting there waiting for a bus to just drop by and go "Hey =3 hop on!", a total deus ex machina.

Wrong story. He doesn't want to go home that badly.
But yes, there is some progress in the recent chapters, like right now.

I just want to say that you shouldn't read this if you don't like it enough to keep reading it for the characters themselves. It's not supposed to be a plot-driven manga. What I really hate are when people demand for a manga to have some random element they like, and then when I point out it has far more of that element than anyone would expect a manga like this to have, that's still not enough for them. Airantou is gradually turning into just as complex an island as the one from "Lost", but don't expect betrayals and submarine explosions and dramatic deaths, it's a love comedy!

That said, the plot heats up with a long arc that starts around chapter 105. It starts with the festival, and transitions to another dramatic and action-filled arc. That arc is over by chapter ~130 after some big revelations, impacting Ikuto's life on the island and setting off character development all around.

Examples of questions that are answered by chapter ~130:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
- What's been going on outside the island this whole time?
- What happened to the men who were lost at sea?
- Ikuto's past--Why does Ikuto get nosebleeds so easily? Why is he so adamant about everything having a scientific explanation?

It's also a must to read the flashback arc about how Suzu's mother and father became a couple. I forget what chapters those are. Just read everything, of course.

I just started reading and before I go any further (to prevent myself from getting disappointed ) I wanted to ask a few questions:

Does the romance develop? If so how??
Is it like Umi no Misaki where he
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
he actually does it with the heroines??

or is it just some misunderstandings that lead to some romantic situations?

How many heroines are actually in his harem?
Is there any actual story or he just stays and the island and the plot is around his daily life?

(Also feel free to post any spoilers you wish)
Thanks in advance!!

EDIT:
Read all available chapters found my answer just gonna leave it in case someone is wondering the same as me
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
It´s a fun manga with a clear harem, he does get close to the girls but no action of any kind happens (as usual ), there seems to be a clear winner in the girls (by Winner I mean the girl the MC likes) but who knows where the plot will go.
I advise ppl to read it since it´s a fun read anyway xD
