Hey there,

I am wondering if someone can help me out with a xmas gift? I would like to get my 12 year old niece into manga (haha, yes I'm being a bad influence) and was wondering what sort of thing you would recommend for a girl that age (with an interesting storyline to boot)?

I was already reading manga at that age, but I come from a very different family background so would appreciate everyone else's opinion.

I would prefer something:

a) With good role models (eg: woman aren't dominated by men, wearing skimpy clothing, men that don't rape women, etc. People can have flaws but they should work hard to change them)

b) That isn't full of gore and violence

c) That has people pursuing their dreams and goals (would be nice if there was a subtle moral or some sort of thing that could be accidentally learnt from the story, like historical or artist facts).

d) That pulls you in!

And, the hardest one:

e) Has been released in German

Fire away!
biggrin

Ps: I was thinking of Cardcaptor Sakura for a while but that might be too childish and then I thought of Basara, but that might be too violent. What is your opinion?

I really don't know what 12-year old's are like these days...
You should stick to completed things because:
1: she doesn't have to wait years and be discouraged when she reaches the last published one
2: it is probably already translated in german

I'd say something like Hana to Akuma? It's not overly complicated, the art is pretty nice, and it's mostly funny, but still has an interesting plot. And it has kind of a fairytale air.

The last volume is out just a few weeks ago.

I can't think of anything else that would suit more and is translated, at least not from what I read...

Basara is definitely too violent imo.

If you want to err on the side of caution, Yotsuba&! is a good choice.

Another fine choice is Twin Spica.

If BL is okay then I highly recommend From Eroica With Love, though there are no important female characters to speak of, one of the main characters is German.

Another classic BL title is Heart of Thomas which should be safe, the reason I recommend it is because it takes place in Germany so there might be a German version available.

Akagami no shirayukihime has a strong independent heroine and is a pure innocent romance with great art and easy to follow panels.
I also recommend Love so Life, which is the cutest, sweetest series and has these adorable twin babies with bubbly stories.
Kamisama Hajimemashita is a great comedy, nothing too mature, very strong heroine with cute art.
Dengeki daisy might be ok... Alongside chocolate cosmos..
Dengeki has a strong heroine, but the story gets complicated as the plot goes on. Chocolate cosmos has cute art but it is a teacher student romance so...
Hiyokoi is aimed at a younger audience than teenagers such as 12-15 but the heroine is a crybaby. Sweet romance though, with good art.
Migawari Hakushaku no Bouken is really good!! I really recommend this one - both the story and the art is good and it will be simple for your niece to follow.
Hope this helps smile

You should give her Special A
It was the first long series that I ever read when I was thirteen.
It's really cute and comically violent.

I am already getting her the 1st volume of Yotsuba&! (it's adorable), but no other volumes are released of it, so I am looking for some others, but thank you!

The only other manga that is available in German from what was recommended was Kodocha. I'm not sure if this alright to give her either as she is adopted herself and I am unsure if she is at an age at where she can deal with it (although I haven't read the manga myself and am going by what reviews say so perhaps I'll take a look how it deals with it and how big of an issue it actually is in the story). Otherwise I would say that is a good suggestion. =)

Would you guys know any other manga that is released in German for her?
I'm sorry if you're unsure if it is as I am too. I am assuming some people will be from Germany here though. I am just going by what is released in German by looking through sites like Book Depository and Amazon Germany, so yeah, thank you for your other suggestions, I do appreciate them, just can't do anything with them. bigrazz

How about Grimms Manga? It's actually first published in German, based on Grimm's stories but executed in cute way.

It's a huge issue in the story. I'd probably not have suggested it if I'd know she was adopted, I don't know if she can deal with that at age 12.

I'm sorry I can't be of much more help, the only other thing I know is available in German is Gosick (Novel). It's quite good, but since it's a mystery there are some murders and stuff, not knowing the girl in question I don't know how could she react to that.

hurm some of the suggested titles seem very set in old fashion views on woman
they dont scream WOMEN BELONG IN THE KITCHEN but they could just as easily have done
not sure if any of these are out in germany but

Usagi Drop i know its labeled "josei" but its really not all that "mature" atleast not in the begining
it is cute, sad, interesting, heartwarming and most importantly GOOD
might have problems with it since its about adoption

Aa Megami-sama
not a very new take on the issues of gender here
but everyone can read and enjoy this masterpiece

or any of Rumiko Takahashis series should work
but since her earlier work have some questionable scenes maybe her later works
like
Inu Yasha or Kyoukai no Rinne

Hikaru no Go is just perfect for everyone not only is it awesome... she just might get interested in the sport of Go

why would reading about adoption be a bad thing
it can only help her to see how other have it with the same sort of background
maybe get ideas for questions to ask...or how to handle situations in a diffrent way
have some faith in her...she is 12, she is not a little child anymore

Yeah let's make her read the ending of Usagi Drop, I'm sure she won't be scarred for life even if
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
the little girl ends up with her adoptive father

ok. not a shoujo but really really sweet:
+Anima
Violence if any is mostly implied (rest comicially), characters are sweet and young (around 12), it's not about romance, and it's really interesting. It's also completed in german. You can buy it on amazon ^^

Edit:
Serial Killers.... no need to fear, it's some sort of gag on bakaupdates. You can find it on a lot of shoujo mangas too.
Slaves... true, but only later on and it's not very brutal.

Just read the reviews. If your niece is more mature, she'll love it, if not.... I'll think about a just cute manga. Maybe something like Chii's Sweet Home

Sorry, I'm not sure where to check if they are in German or not, but if you can find it I would recommend:

Warau Kanoko-sama (This has a sequel.)
Kuragehime

(Sorry I don't have more choices, a lot of manga I read that has a female lead that is a good role model usually is on the more mature side with a bit of violence. It is quite sad how much sexism is in manga.)

Edit: I haven't read it in a long time, but I think Full Moon o Sagashite would work.

Second Full Moon o Sagashite.
I think Shugo Chara! will be great smile It's cute, funny, have romance, action and a lot of talking about dreams, growing up, etc. This would be my choice ^^
Your idea with Card Captor Sakura also should work - I was older when I was reading and watching it and I totally loved it (I still do) xD
Hmmm... maybe Beauty Pop?
