Real Issues of the Day

Member 6:00 pm, Sep 21 2012 Posts: 255	Maybe a bit of a peculiar request, but I'm looking for manga that has a focus on or discusses real life issues of the modern era as a central theme or major focus (not just a side note). An example would be a manga that might address Japan's present age discrepancy problems with people living longer, fewer children being born, urbanization causing migrations of youth away from rural towns, etc... Doesn't really matter to me if the manga's genre is fantasy, futuristic, historical, or whatnot - I'd just like to see how some mangaka may or may not have presented and examined these kinds of issues with their readers.

If you know anything about the medical/drug industry then the manga will seem really ridiculous. Wandering Son is a sensitive and realistic take on issues of transgenderism. ________________

Local Prig Member 1:09 am, Sep 23 2012 Posts: 1891	Oyasumi Punpun is probably the most convincing portrait of what it's like to grow up into a role as a furiitaa. It also discusses new religion a bit (it becomes a major theme in the latter half). It's odd for me to say this, considering the surreal bends he goes on, but Asano actually treads in this kind of category quite a bit- he's one of the most clearly recognizable voices of the 'lost generation' that grew up while the economic bubble burst in the early nineties, and the issues he writes about are very applicable. Some of his oneshots (particularly the ones in Sekai no Owari to Yoakemae) have dealt with a father losing his job during that era, migration to and from the countryside, etc. ________________ Reviews of my Work: You are kind of boring - Blackorion Congratulations!
