Hero/Heroine starts off good or mostly good. Then realizes that only by becoming a monster can they protect/save the one(s) they love. Would like it if the main character is forced into serious introspection. Needs some romance. Main coupling cannot be yaoi/yuri/shounen ai/shoujo ai. Any other character couplings are okay.
Longer series' are preferred but more emphasis should go to level of completion.
There is no romance and it's only a relative "descent to darkness" but I strongly advise you to read Monster since it's such a masterpiece. And the introspection part is great.
