The only anime/manga related content I can think of that comes close to what I'm looking is the flashback parts of Gungrave.
I'm looking for like the manga version of Godfather, Scarface, Carlito's Way, Donnie Brasco, Menace to Society, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, etc. Preferably no supernatural stuff or magical powers. If it is there, I'd like it to be far in the background and just a tool they use to do gangster shit rather than the main basis of the series.

The closest I can think of is Baccano!, it does have the supernatural element but it's really cool. Did you check the mafia and organized crime categories?

Maybe not exactly what you are looking for, but here are some: Eden: It's an Endless World! <- higly recommend, a lot of gangster stuff, but mostly about past the middle of the series. Akumetsu <- as far as I remember, not much gangster stuff, but has a nice feel to it in a somewhat similar way to what you could find in the Gangster way (in my opinion) Tenjou tenge <- some gang stuff here and there, but a lot of supernatural and crazy fist fighting, probably not what you want but worth a shot I'd say. Sun-ken rock -> It's actually in my on hold list, but from the beginning part, which I've read, it has lots of gangster stuff Black Lagoon crazy ass gun fighting and gangster/drug dealers stuff, quite good, a special thumbs up for this one
Well, i guess this is it, if I remember anything else I will post it here and if you find a nice one different from the ones I mentioned, please let me know! I also got interested in the gangster theme you are looking for (:

It's been a while since I read it, I don't remember much of it, but do get this feeling out of it. Probably because of the "punshiment" thing often found in gangster/mafia wars stories.

You might wanna try Gangsta. It's about two men who do jobs for hire and they have ties with the local mafia.
