This week's poll is from Hellsayer. Back in June, we had a similar poll about time skips. Now it's time for the flashbacks!
You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related): http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903
Previous Poll Results Question: You wish most manga you like were adapted to a(n) Choices: Anime movie - votes: 750 (5.9%) Anime TV show - votes: 6829 (54.1%) Live-Action movie - votes: 184 (1.5%) Live-Action TV show - votes: 249 (2%) Musical - votes: 42 (0.3%) Drama CD - votes: 114 (0.9%) Game - votes: 468 (3.7%) J-Drama/K-Drama - votes: 413 (3.3%) Doujinshi - votes: 395 (3.1%) Novel - votes: 274 (2.2%) Real life situation - votes: 1284 (10.2%) No adaptions! Manga only! - votes: 1617 (12.8%) There were 12619 total votes. The poll ended: November 3rd 2012
So anime wins. To be expected. Kinda sad that the runner-up is the ones who don't like adaptations at all

Unless they are well placed and a real necessity to grasp the plot, i prefer manga to be flashback free... I just don't like feeling that things won't change in the manga with that ark.
Edit: I'm not only talking about shonen, this is in general.

i do not see a problem
unless it is used to retcon the story it is legitime [and often good] way of telling a story

I usually dislike them, but that doesn't mean I don't want them there, because sometimes they're necessary to the plot and work really well. I often find myself thinking "Oh god, flashback..." when they appear though, hence why I went for dislike. The worst kind of flashbacks are the ones that relate to past chapters. Don't wanna see it again thanks. I can remember what happened. Get on with the story and stop wasting page space.

If it's naruto, I'm getting super angry about them.
If it's any other manga, they're fine.
And "I've never encountered one" That would be the option for people who've read like 1-3 series and those happened to not have any?

I wish there was an option " Only if it is well done". In my opinion, examples of well done flashbacks can be found in One Piece. If done poorly, they break from the narrative flow and detracts from the story.

Generally I dont like them. Maybe I am too tired of One Piece? The only series I wont mind flashbacks in no matter what quantity is Noblesse as the events prior to the storyline is one of the major driving force behind this manga. Its a pity as author doesnt focus much on them.

Flashbacks suck. Unless you've never seen the material, but even then they usually suck.

It depend of what kind of flashback it's. If it flashback of something that never happened in the manga i like them, but if it's flashback of earlier chapters in the manga i don't like them. Oh! and i guess i hate flashback that last too long too.

i tend to like them. its pretty obvious that all comments above mine are talking about flashbacks in shounen...but if you look at seinen manga plots, they almost always have some ambiguity to them, there is always something mysterious about the main character we're left in the dark about, and these are usually explained in the middle or towards the end in the form of flashbacks..i see no reason to hate them as they are always used to make unclear things or motives more clear

As long as they're well defined (that is you can tell it's a flashback) and not excessively used, I don't care. They usually add to the story and character depth if used well.

the longer a series is, the more inevitable flashbacks become. Eventually people want to see how exactly main characters have ended up where they are.

Oops! I forgot about Seinen..... Well if they are done well then I dont have a reason to dislike them even if its a shonen.

It depends on how they are used. Honestly, I usually love flashbacks when they are used for moving the plot or for character development. Then again...there were times where it was just plainly abused. Kemono no Souja Erin...I swear...if they took out all those repeated flashbacks (on the same couple scenes) in pretty much every episode, the series would be at least 1/3 less. Not to mention there were recap episodes...the horror

they make me kind of confused because sometimes i can't tell when the flashback starts and when it ends.
